What are the effects of fluting on an AR740 20" barrel? Will it cause degraded accuracy? Wanting to build as light and accurate as possible. Thanks

Done at the proper time and done correctly, fluting does not affect accuracy.

Not with our barrels. Impact shift comes from stress remaining in the barrel coming out as the barrel warms. Our barrels are stress relieved in a vacuum furnace so this isn’t a problem.

I believe the barrel makers stress relieve the barrel after fluting. I do not think it wise to flute it without stress relieving.

Stress Relieving is done before fluting by most I know in the industry. According to Lilja, Bartlein, and Kreiger, fluting is the last step in the process of making a barrel. Done with coolant and sharp tooling, the temp of the barrel does not exceed ambient temps. We have found no difference in accuracy with or without fluting.
