Howdy as just_john suggested I'm bringing my build to the horde!

Expectations
To be built over the next 3 months, I like sales, mil discounts, and group buys.
200-300 yard shots in low light from a prone or sitting position (overwatch of a stream bed)
Sub 1 MOA w/ 123g. Hornady ELD

Parts on hand:
Aero Enhanced upper
Aero 15" Quantum Handguard
Aero 6.5 BCG

Lower on hand
Milled 80 (excellent fit with Aero Enhanced .223 Wylde AR Performance 3R)
Larue 2 stage trigger
Magpul PRS Lite
Aero buffer kit

Which parts would be the best value?
1. 18" Barrel w/ 5R rifling $250 max (Just missed a Wilson Combat sale)
2. Gas block (do I really need an adjustable or standard?)
3. Muzzle/flash/comp.? Leaning towards a linear comp to preserve hearing and straight line recoil for follow up.
4. What else?

Optics
Thinking Leupold 3HD Firedot or maybe ATN...

I have a Faxon Group Buy Monster barrel and I really like it. BFT at 6.5 Outfitters has a great hunting barrel from Green Mountain manufactured to his specifications. These barrels have been really good, especially for the price. Take a look at BFT’s gas blocks and muzzle devices. You can spend more money on a higher quality but if this is for hunting these make a very handy rifle.


I also have a 18” Faxon Group Buy Monster barrel from BFT plus a 12” Green Mountain 6.5 Grendel barrel. If I weren’t satisfied I wouldn’t mention them. I can’t tell any difference in quality between the Faxon and Green Mountain barrels. These are rack grade barrels but they get good reviews.


With BFT’s barrels you won’t need an adjustable gas block unless your going to use a suppressor.

IF only 65outfitters had the 18” Faxon Monster Barrel in stock...maybe group buy?

With all the supply issues they are currently on order. I can understand if you want an 18” barrel but for hunting a 16” barrel can be used from 300 yards and in quite effectively. Here is the velocity difference I got for an 18” Brownell’s SS 5R 1:8 twist barrel and my J&T 16” 1:9 twist CMV barrel with a Magnettospeed chronograph.


I’m not trying to convince you to buy the 16” barrel but to let you see the difference in velocity for different barrel lengths. I enjoyed building AR-15’s and I have several. I was just trying to give you another option. There are more barrel options today than ten to twelve years ago for AR-15 barrels in 6.5 Grendel.

Thanks VASCAR2! I appreciate the input. Maybe I see the 18" as a good compromise and have over thought the barrel? Good thing I'm not in a hurry.
