IN STOCK Hybrid MONSTER Bolt
I have a couple on reserve from you but I am good till you get the extractor tolerance issue fixed.
I would like to keep my name on the list till you get everything figured out and can ship.
And to get a better extractor is definitely worth the wait for me. The two I had on the wait list were going to be backup bolts in case I broke an extractor. So to me waiting 3 months or so for a stronger extractor is a no brainer.

Well, they sure look great! I'll be around, cash in hand, when they're ready.

Well that is a shame. I'll be waiting patiently for when they're ready to ship. This isn't holding up a build on my end.

BTW, I like the idea of the neutered FP for testing. I always wanted to do that. Just don't have an extra FB to destroy. I might go ahead and try to find a cheapo pin and grind down the tip.

Gosh though, this has me wondering about the extractors I purchased from Black Rifle Arms, which you said comes from the same source as your extractors? I wonder if these new extractors are not compatible with my current Grendel bolts (a BA bolt and one that I purchased from you last fall.) I guess I'll need to do some testing on my own. Come to think of it, I do have a dummy round that I put together for testing along these lines.

SDW, your BRA extractors are fine.

An extractor kinda pushes down on the cartridge, kinda pushing it against the opposite wall of the boltface counterbore if there's enough slop. When you decrease the inner boltface counterbore diameter as I did, the cartridge can no longer be pushed down as far as previously, and thus the top of the "hump" on a Grendel extractor will grind and bind against the extractor teeth. It's by a maddeningly tiny amount, something like .005, but hardened steel on hardened steel just ain't gonna give. At least, that's my current take on the situation. There is a network of tiny interdependent dimensions that all need to be sorted in cooperation with each other.

I think it's been said when you're on the bleeding edge, you can get cut. Or something about the pioneer gets the arrows.... Cool

Anyway, the current standard Grendel extractor works just fine with the current standard Grendel bolt. In the meantime, I ordered a pile of standard bolts since they work and have worked well. But guess what? Backordered. And, yep, another ... three months.

BFT,

When you get it worked out just let me know as I still want one. By the time your done I might have the cash set aside for two. Been using my spare gun money for powder and primers when they are close to normal price, walking away from idiots that want stupid prices for them.

New Bolt looks OUTSTANDING, I'm not going anywhere, I'm waiting as long as it takes for my two bad boys. I do have a request though, will you put back one of your 12" 6mm ARC barrels to send along with my two bolts? Just let me know how you want to handle it, thanks.

Nice rounding on the new one's ejector too. Both the Mod0 and Mod1 look to be improvements in strength over some other bolts available. For example, the bolt that came with the Aero Precision Grendel BCG I'm using in my Monster upper.

So I'd venture to guess that the new bolt bodies even with the old extractors won't work either? Thought I recall reading that the extractors themselves were slightly tweaked in design as well?

Hate it when a plan doesn't' work out.

LR, the extractors on my Mod1 design are the same as they've ever been. The bolt dimensions have changed, not the extractors at this point.

You might remember reading that I've INTENDED for years to tweak the extractor design, but haven't as yet been able to do it. Now is the time....

Or you might be noting that the current Grendel extractors — dating from the Bill Alexander days — are necessarily different from standard 556 extractors.

SDW, yes, the rounding on the ejector is optimal.

U P D A T E : Problem solved. Turned out simple.

Was working on the extractor drawings in detail, calculating the claw dimensions, when it occurred to me: "Maybe the claw, the 'fang,' is simply too long. What if I just file down the 'fang' a touch and make it shorter? Then the extractor hump won't be pushed up as high and grind and bind against the extension teeth."

Took out the ol' Makita angle grinder with a metal grinding wheel, gripped an extractor in some pliers, and kinda touched the bottom of the extractor claw to it. Some tiny sparks flew. Soon the bottom of the extractor claw was a shiny silver — a little chewed up like a tiny chihuahua got after it — but it was, indeed, shorter.

Reassembled the bolt, installed it in a gun with my dummy firing pin, and hand-cycled a magazine: Slick, smooth action and a beautiful pile of cartridges. Hallelujah!

Now, how to "fix" 100 extractors on an industrial scale with perfect mechanical precision? Ain't gonna Billy-Bob angle grind 100 extractors. So that's the next problem....

2 steps forward, 1 step back. Keep at it BFT. A thought just occurred to me. I see a lot smart people here buy extra extractors in the untimely event that their extractors fail. It sounds like buying the extractors out there currently for the Grendel bolt is not going to work with this new and improved bolt. Will you now also be in the "mod1" extractor business?

A holding jig for use on a surface grinder?
Idea #2, use a product like dykem blue on the extractor claw, then use caliper to mark the proper trim length and have the end user file or grind for proper function, include a little how to instruction leaflet.

I have a half dozen BRA Grendel extractors & a couple from PF. Once I get my Mod1 bolt, I'll take a look at its extractor & then modify some of my stash of spares to match. I have all kinds of clamps, vises & vise-grips & a Foredom tool with different types of grinding wheels. I've already used the Foredom tool with Cratex wheels to knock off the points on extractors that needed dehorning.

BFT. Wondering did you take the oring out from under tte extractor?

If not maybe take one of the bolts and remove the oring and see how it does.

BEL, yes, will also sell spare Mod1 extractors. In a pinch, you'll be able to use a standard extractor if you just file the bottom of the claw a touch. Like I say, they actually work fine when firing, just hand cycling was the problem, it was so close.

A5B, yes, in my testing I tried both with and without the O-ring. No difference. The length of the claw was the problem.

Being a retired machinist with 40+ years exp, I believe that I could fixture up and make a couple of these work. Still have my Bridgeport mill and my lathe and surface grinder.

So I would like to go ahead and order and pay for the two that I reserved.

I have too much going on at this time to do a lot of them, and I would have to make sure that the development was perfect, which takes time, RDTE and such. or I would volunteer to do the batch. Screwing up a few of my own is one thing, screwing up everyone else's is another.

MC, going ahead with your order is fine with the understanding of what you're getting into. I figure about .005 shaved off, even polished from, the bottom curvature of the extractor claw should about do it, but maybe from a machinist's perspective you could let us know.

Email me at SixFiveArms (AT) ProtonMail [dot] com and we'll get it sorted. It'll hafta be via PayPal or something since it won't do to post them up for sale on my SixFiveArms.com website.
