Looking for a New Electronic Scale

A5BLASTER Wrote:Lmao. Dude I have loaded nearly that much since November on my chargemaster lite. Since I have got it, i have loaded and fired enough rounds to burn out 3 AA 16 inch light barrels from my stash of 12.

Don't for one second try to convince yourself are anyone one else. That because you bought a 1600 dollar powder throw that it's saving you any great amount of time for other things.

Let's just cut the mud right quick on that fact.

Like I said if your more worried about the time it takes too get a charge thrown, your worried about the wrong things and should probably step away from the bench and reevaluate.

Now I'm all for more precision and one day when my chargemaster lite gives up the ghost I will have the autotrickler setup.

I didn't buy a $1600 powder thrower. You seem confused, maybe you should start your own thread.

centerfire Wrote:Once you have the FX120i and use it a bit take a look at the Auto Trickler V3. My A2520 Grendel load dispenses +/-.02gr in less than 10 seconds. I ran the same load in my buddies CM Lite and it took 28 seconds. Larger grain powder like H4831 take a little longer (maybe 15 seconds tops). I've owned a bunch of different scales and throwers and FX120i with ATv3 is amazing. A friend has a Prometheus and it works about the same for something like six times the price. You're going to love the scale regardless of the resolution, the advantages will be readily apparent.

Yeah I’ve already been eyeballing it. Big Grin I was considering getting a second CM Lite to speed things up. The more I see, learn about the Auto Trickler, the more I’m convinced it’s the better solution. At least for me.

JMO, and I have all the other digital scales mentioned accept for the FX 120i, I use an A&D scale, it maybe out of ur price range? I have HR 100AZ, it is IMO the beat scale for precision loading, but here again u will be chasing the prefect charge weight, by that I mean it just like any other scale, the finishing end of ur charge weight will be how its metered, if you can find away to not use a trickle or maybe a more precise trickle into the pan u will lesson ur reloading time, I chase for .004 or less on my charge weights, but with my trickle I always seem to be over! I have to sort thru the pan and replace a grain of powder to get what I want! I know that's being picky but that's me! but if that kind of precision is what u want? that's what it takes!Cool

Yep got it. I don’t compete, only bang steel and hunt, so, I think I can fight the urge to go much deeper chasing load precision. The FX120i should give me more than the resolution I’m after right now. Who knows, maybe I’ll get the bug to try F-Class or PRS in the futute. Then all bets are off. Cool

It's going to depend on the type of powder you're throwing. H4831 kernels weigh .05gr each, sometimes more. I don't load to the hundredth of a grain though, it just isn't necessary.

I found out today Reloader 16 kernels are about half that, about .025gr each. Threw 20 charges with the CM Lite and double checked them against a RCBS 505. Only about 1/4 matched up exactly, the rest were .1 off, high and low. A couple were even off .2!

Then tried it again with SW Match Rifle, a spherical powder. The results were a little better but not much. Only one large deviation but a majority of the loads were .01 high or low.

Still plenty acccurate for almost any type of shooting though once a node has been located.

harpoon, I don’t know how long you have owned your charge master lite. But there are many little things you could do to make it more accurate. Like, gray fox said keep it away from any interference in the house. Motors fluorescent lights, vibrations, fans, even cell phones.I isolated mine from my bench and have it sitting on a 1 inch thick Piece of rubber mat.
A while back I was unhappy with my charge master and I also wanted to get another scale. But I am glad that I decided to really learn how to use this scale before I wasted a bunch of money on something else.
I did a little research. And I learned how to use this chargemaster to my advantage. The average FPS out of a five shot group using my magnetospeed used to be over +/- 20. Now it’s around +/- 10
I agree with what A5 said. When my charge master gives up the ghost that is when I am going to spend my money on something else.
But you do what you want, it’s your money

Have you guys read this Secrets of the Houston Warehouse article? Now maybe it doesn't apply to all calibers or all barrels, and maybe things are different if you're not practicing the same techniques as in the article, but they essentially claim charge weight is not important as long as it's relatively consistent...within a couple of grains...group size is unaffected.

Reprogramming my charge master drop cycles and adding the brass insert went a long way to improving its drop accuracy, much fewer over charges.

Fore more accurate loads have the chargemaster dump a couple tenths short, transfer to an accurate scale and trickle the rest in on a more accurate scale like a good balance or some of the ones suggested. For precision loads I use an old balance beam scale.

I do know one custom ammo manufacture that uses a scale accurate to .02 grains or about 1 kernel of extruded powder for his manufactured load.

The regular CM can be calibrated as to its drop speeds and reduce any over-charges to a minimum... the CM lite as I understand it, cannot. Also there is the serrated plastic straw insert that you should do to improve your drops, this works for both models.

Hardly anyone thinks the CM is slow. Well, except for all of these people.

Ya know, I have been known to screen my black powder to get the "fines" out before an important match, but I just can't see where poking around in a scale pan of smokeless powder, looking for a larger or smaller granule, and then having some larger or smaller granules sorted out and handy to replace them with can make much, if any, difference downrange. Kind of a lot of effort to be lost in the wind. Especially since that level of precision would have to be carried over to each component of each cartridge to justify the effort. There are practical limits to consistency when handloading. Nothing wrong with a good scale, but sorting granules would make me crazy(er).

This made me smile just a little! Wink

Look at it this way. In the end, we’re both spending the exact same amount. I’ve just decided that I’m not going to wait until the Chargemaster “gives up the ghost”. The upside is, I still get the benefit of using both, right now! And.......... I’m not “out” the value of the Chargemaster just because I’ve purchased another scale.

While you and A5 Blaster have apparently decided, you’d rather postpone the benefit of using an upgrade, and for god knows how long. Big Grin

To each, his own! Wink

Harpoon, one clarification: to you it is an upgrade, to others it may be just an expense with no really observable benefit. So as you say, each has to decide where to spend the money they have...
Stay safe, bro.

Your mud's totally going to get cut now. Just wait until that dude demands you drop what you're doing and send him something because he's too cheap to buy it himself.

To be fair, it would actually mean a lot more if the advice was coming from someone who actually owned one, or at the very least had actually used one. And not from someone, respectfully, who hasn't. Just saying...........

Again, once a node has been located, I personally believe +/- .10 accuracy is more than adequate for most shooting disciplines. Putting accuracy aside, the Auto-trickeler is demonstrably faster than either Chargemaster. Much faster! Orders of magnitude faster! Whether someone sees that as an upgrade, is, well, subjective. Cutting the time spent throwing charges by at least half...............is an “upgrade”. At least for me it is.

Peace.

I've owned a Chargemaster, several lab scales, and a FX120i with ATv3 (I have access to a V2 also). But nah, some stranger on the internet that's never even seen this stuff has totally told me I don't know what I'm talking about.

These guys are probably FOS too: https://forum.snipershide.com/threads/au...r.6949161/
