Scope mounting suggestions for AR build?

I'm building a deer gun AR for shorter ranges (<500 yards). It is a Anderson lightweight upper with the Monster group buy barrel. Freefloat handguard. I prefer the new leapold ar mounts, nice and strong but not overly heavy and they mount up nice and stong.

I like one piece mounts and recently picked a Nikon precision MSR scope mount, they have been discounted and are a good buy at around $100. For something lighter weight then I like the Warne one piece mount.

The Nikon MSR deals seem to have dried up. It’s showing discontinued most places I looked. The Warne looks nice too.

I have a few of the Aero Precision ultra light in both 1" and 30 MM and they have worked very well.

LaRue CAN QD SPR Mount $138.96, made in USA, awesome return-to-zero if you pull it off and re-attach.



If you find yourself paying more for a cheap import made from substandard materials and processes for the same price, get the US-made LaRue instead.

I didn't realize they were marked that low, as I was going to recommend the VFZ option on an LT-158.

I like the Larue but am not sure the quick detach is worth the extra, as I don’t have another AR I want scoped.

We've had at least one forum member break 3 or 4 of those Aero mounts.

Be extremely careful with your fastener torque when installing that mount.

The emphasis is definitely on lightweight, not strength when you look at the thin areas of the rings that hook together:



I have several Aero products that I love, but I'll never own one of these mounts after seeing where they sacrificed in order to make weight.

When I recommend a scope mount, rings, or any piece of gear, it's because I've lost count of how many different options in that segment I've had personal experience with and what works vs what doesn't. It isn't because I have one and think it's cool based on that single sample size and am self-validating. It's because I want to protect people from making the same mistakes I have made or have seen others make, thereby passing the savings off to you.

I would not trust that lightweight mount to even take a bump, just based on what I've seen. It's not worth the initial appearance of saving a few dollars if you lose zero in the field, and hunting rifles tend to take a beating.

I've installed a few and really backed off the torque spec with my Wheeler FAT Wrench.

If you don't have a torque wrench, I highly recommend them, especially if you're looking for the most accuracy from your rifles.

Just to be transparent I'm the member that has broken 5 of these mounts. I will no longer use are suggest their use.

Here is why. Depending on what size rings it has and how much offset it gives the instructions on the box ( if they still put them) give wildly diffrent torque specs.

The scope rings are a huge pain in the backside too work with and get the scope level. Not a single one of the 5 I had would hold zero. You can hold the mount in your hands and flex it, when I mean flex it, you can feel and see it twist.

Straight up those mounts are best leavt too the 3g crowd. They are not meant for hunting/defensive are precision shooting with a optic.

Where it will break is the recoil lug on the bottom, it's too thin and weak and when you torque the screws down it will shear the recoil lug right off.

As I stated in my first response I use and suggest the leupold ar mounts. I can't think of the exact model I'm useing now but it is basicly idiot/bomb proff yet not overbuilt and heavy are bulky. Not to badly priced either.

Well, this is why I ask. I had not heard of the mounts breaking. I’ll start putting money back for a LaRue. Guys, thank you! This is why I love this forum. People helping and advising each other.

I never broke mine. I chased accuracy bugs with the help of a friend for almost six months, and several hundred factory rounds. After re-building the upper three times, re-mounting the scope more than I care to say, and mounting three alternate optics, we just swapped optics in another heavier mount. Went from 1 1/4 groups at great effort to 1/2-3/4 groups with little effort. The mount went on the ground, and found the underside of my boot it's reward. I was embarrassed at how long I chased issues that were un-related to the actual issue, while defending the mount. Even to the extent of not believing it could have been the issue.

I will never recommend this mount for any group or distance work. It's really good for a 1X LVPO or close in quick work, but it's not a magnified optic mount with any legitimacy in my opinion.

Larue, ADM, Bobro are all top notch & give RTZ "guarantee's". I've used Warne & they're decent (simply have others I prefer).

If you just wanna get stupid there's also Spuhr, Badger (probably others) but they're on a whole nother price range (at least for me they are).

Geissele & Seekins I've heard good things about but haven't used either of them.

I have 2 Larue's, a Bobro, Warne, & one of the Aero's mentioned above. The Warne & Aero sit in the safe cause I seem to be a hoarder. The Larues & Bobro have found permanent homes on my rifles or are on their way to having permanent homes.
