Gene, I too think there is something grossly wrong if that was his experience.
There is not a physical way to increase recoil using a WCI brake, it has the ability to work better as more gas pressure is introduced.
I know this because it gets shot with .338Lapua and .50BMG rifles.
The first guy that got his for Sig Blazer .338Lapua said it felt like a .308win to him.
He is in his mid 70's and has a bad shoulder too.
