If you were out walking in the park or on a local trail, and some irresponsible dog owner lets their 100lb fighting dog with a bad temperament off-leash, would you stand and let it savagely shred your child's arm off, or shoot it before it has a chance?

Very good examples. My wife is not opposed to guns by any means, and 20 years ago before we were married she used to shoot with me. I've tried getting her to shoot with me since we had our son and her excuse is she doesn't want to shoot anyone. My reply is "Well nobody wants to shoot someone, but if hunters (my son) life is in danger you should be prepared."Still nothing yet, but I'm not giving up. BTW, she knows how to operate the pistol I keep inside the house, and she's a pretty good shot, but I think the mental training aspect needs to be addressed. I also admit that I need to brush up on my pistol skills, and I've fabricated some new targets and plan to add a perpetrators noggin to it for added practice.
