If you believe a person should only carry when they identify a direct threat I highly disagree.
Men are capable of doing great things and at the same time doing horrible things.
All men have the capacity for both Good and Evil.
As long as there is free will, and I hope there always is, there will be an existing threat in day to day life that merits carrying a weapon.
If it's for my own protection I'll likely carry a weapon but may not. However, if I have a young lady or a loved one under my protection you can be d**n sure I'll have a weapon nearby.

A guy or gal makes their decisions based on their own perceptions. I surely won't get in their way but I may question their decision. In this case, none of these gun owners think someone is going to enter their Starbucks and blast people. It is as likely to happen in Seattle as a asteroid hitting the same Starbucks. And the chances that any of these guys may witness a act where they would be authorized deadly force -- while going to or coming from that Starbucks -- is just as remote.
I don't go into the world thinking everything is a threat to me or my loved ones, so I carry when I perceive a chance exists where I may have to defend myself. Besides, carrying a 1911 around really sucks. It is heavy, hard to conceal, digs into my side, destroys clothing, and requires effort to safeguard it when dealing with places that do not allow firearms.
I take it you don't have a Concealed Carry Permit or Alabama doesn't allow for concealed carry?
