Texas had some very onerous gun laws following the UT Tower shooting in the 60s. Concealed carry was a step in the right direction. We are working on open carry after passage of Castle Doctrine a few years back.
There are caveats to open carry of rifles (i.e. not calculated to cause alarm)…some local LEA's use that caveat to effectively prohibit open carry. Austin, Houston and a few other towns/cities practice this (police departments, not sheriff's departments). A good example was the Temple police who arrested the Fort Hood soldier who was walking on a country road with his Boy Scout son (who was working on his 10 mile hike for a merit badge). http://www.kcentv.com/story/21860185/loc...uns-rights
