Because if enough gun owners would open carry, it would get to the point where it was normal. In small town Idaho, you see lots of people at the grocery and hardware store who are carrying, no one thinks anything of it.
The Constitution says "keep and bear arms". Bearing arms, by definition, connotes carrying arms that are visible for your own and others defense. That's our Constitutional right. Rifles were the most common arm at the time of the Constitution, so it was really addressing that right specifically. Texas gets that, but for the life of me I can't figure out why they outlaw open pistol carry!
I think states where the right to open carry is based upon owning a concealed carry license is one of the biggest travesties foisted upon American citizens. The Constitution guarantees that right. MOST state Constitutions do as well.
Most states also have specific signage required of those barring carry in their establishments. IF it isn't there and in the proper format, you are under no obligation to obey it.
