The left-right-middle game is an old trick to move masses in a planned direction. Lately it goes by Problem-Reaction-Solution. Before that it was Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis. Older still, the pillars of gevurah, chesed, and tiferet.
This is one reason that I advocate objective standards. Look how far off course subjectivism and exceptionalism have taken us.
For some serious perspective, read the platform planks in The Communist Manifesto and then recall what "right wing" Republicans support—even take for granted—these days.
Well the bankers called a meetin', to the White House they went one day
They wuz goin' to call on the pres-i-dent, in a quiet and a sociable way
The afternoon was sunny and the weather it was fine
