A police state doesn't just show up one day. There are enablers. In our case, we have become a nanny state. More and more Americans are expecting the "state" to take care of their every need. This leads (or has led) government to put forth the idea that they are there to provide basic protection and there is no need for a gun other than "sporting" interests.
We aren't a complete police state. While there are some examples that lend credence that we are in beginning phases of becoming such a state, you need to live overseas and see what a TRUE police state looks/feels like.
