Not sure where you are getting your 6.8 SPC energy and velocity numbers, but the Wilson Combat website shows a muzzle velocity of only 2550 fps with the 110 grain Nosler Accubond while you claim up to 2810 fps. That is a SIGNIFICANT difference, every will be correspondingly lower.

Using an on-line Ballistic Calculator and plugging in 2550 fps, 110 grain bullet, BC of 0.37 and the energy drops below 1000 ft-lbs of energy at just over 200 yards, which confirms what I previous had written.

So while you claim:

20 inch ARP 6.8, 110 Accubond 2810 fps, ammo from Wilson Combat. 330 yards 1000 ft/lbs

The actual ballistics for that round suggest that roughly 225 yards = 1000 ft-lbs, that is 105 yards shorter than your data.

While the MILITARY considers 500 ft lbs of energy to be the minimum for shooting a man, many hunters consider the ethical minimum for a clean kill on an animal to be 1000 ft-lbs. While not definitive, here is a cartridge designer who suggests that ethical hunting requires 1500 fl-lbs of energy AND at least 2500 fts of velocity: LINK => http://www.lazzeroni.com/ct_lrs.htm Now if we applied his standards to the 6.8SPC then it would not be ethical to hunt with that round past 50 yards, so it seems to go back to the far more common 1000 ft-lbs of energy standard.

Consequently the effective ethical hunting range of the 6.8 SPC is roughly 225 yards while the ethical hunting range for the 6.5 Grendel is roughly 400 yards . . . assuming a hunter can make those shots.
