I feel you on the 16 barrel or less. Theyre so much easier to throw into a small carbine case and stow in a vehicle.
16 barrels I have used with great results so far:
AA MLGS Medium Contour I ordered from Midway in 2009
Lilja Wasp profile lightweight Stainless, 3 groove, shoots bug holes
AA fluted light MLGS (built several uppers with these for friends and they all were very pleasant to shoot)
Alexander Arms is using .875 gas block journals if you go that route.
