Man, that really sucks. The property owner is the responsible party, but there is more than one way to skin this cat.
Not sure what state you are in, but most states require licensing for HVAC contractors. The contractor, if licensed, has more skin in the game than the landlord. A written complaint filed with the states licensing board with the evidence you have presented would be very motivating. Include estimates for ALL of the damages, and see what the contractor does to make you whole.
They do not want to loose their license, or it will cost them a lot more than your repairs in short order. If the work was not done by a licensed installer, your recourse may lie solely with the landlord. Check out the building codes in your city/county as well.
