Kudos to the BP guy who grabbed what was available (the barbershop shotgun) instead of the group of leo's who stood around "because they didn't have those riot shields" or whatever... when trouble erupts you take what you've got into the fight, not cry about what you don't have.
I wonder what kind of training they had, doesn't sound like much.
Even in our industry you train on scenarios where something you normally count on, is broken/missing/inoperative, so you learn to adjust or go contingency, and even innovate if necessary. The one thing you don't do is freeze or give up.
