Status of the Next Gen Squad Weapon (NGSW)?

Just as with the ACR program of the 1980s, I think we will see ancillary systems and improvements added to the legacy systems.

From ACR, we got the flat top upper from the Colt submission, the stock became the precursor to the LMT SOPMOD M4A1 stock, the Elcan off the Colt became the MGO, and the ACOG off the AAI rifle became the initial SOPMOD rifle optic, and evolved into USMC and US Army rifle optics. Look at what’s common to all the ACR submissions that was not common to any US service rifle prior and then what happened in reality. Optics...



I think a SAW replacement has a better chance of happening in terms of weapons systems, but there will be serious questions about ammunition and the DODIC/logistics structure for that.

If I was looking for a picture of the future, I would focus more closely on what the ancillary system developments have been with NGSW.
