With the Mini-14 and Garand-based actions, you are relying on the feed lips to orient the cartridge to the chamber. This is why Mini-14 mags are narrower in the front than the "spine" of the mag, whereas AR15 mags are straight-bodied since you have the feed ramps in the barrel extension.
That Mini-Grendel is beautiful. The more I think about it, the more I want a super-heavy barreled set-up with a composite or laminate stock, with pillar bedding. At a glance, people would think it was just another bolt gun.
