The length of your barrel only determines muzzle velocity, not accuracy. Inside of 300 yards, a 16 barrel with a thinner profile rifle would be a great choice for young hunters.
Accuracy comes from the quality of your build. In fact, Ive heard (and tend to believe) that shorter barrels are capable of higher degrees of accuracy because harmonics are less of a factor. I use a 12 grendel pistol as my truck gun because its so easy to handle. Its a cheap rack grade PSA, but shoots around MOA. I wouldnt hesitate to hunt with it at 300 or even 400 yards. Coyotes have met their maker at around 300 with it.
