Hello new to site. Thinking of a grendel for whitetail hunting for my daughter. Probably 300 yds or less. Will need it to be portable so not to heavy. Question can i use my colt cr6920mp lower ? All my looking and i never seen a colt lower on any builds. I already ordered an aero precision m4e1upper to start my build. Barrel will be a good one but have to wait until after the holidays since thats where i plan on spending my money. I am thinking 16" but 18" max. From a big name precision maker. Not sure which yet. I will get dies as i handload. But will buy what i can as far as loaded rounds. And suggestions on 16 or 18 inch ? Will be dragging through the alders chasing deer and occasionally still hunting.

Your Colt 6920 should be fine with the 6.5 Grendel. Precision Firearms, Craddock Precision turn out quality barrels using various blanks of the buyers choice (Bartlein, Douglas, Lilja Criterion ect). You can order a 6.5 Grendel barrel directly from Lilja or other manufacturers. Brownells house brand barrels are currently made by Faxon but they also sell Criterion 6.5 Grendel barrels. The 18 Brownells barrel weighs 2 pounds one ounce and are in stock. The 18 or the 20 Brownells/Faxon are worth considering since Brownells has a good reputation for customer service.
The Group Buy 6.5 Grendel barrels sold by BFT at SixFive Arms and manufactured by Green Mountain are getting good reviews. Barrels are on order from Green Mountain and are really good barrels for the money. I have two Faxon Group Buy barrels (16 & 18) and a 12 Green Mountain Group Buy barrel. Ive been very satisfied with my Group Buy barrels.

you'll likely get as many answers as forum members on bbl length. i'd say 18" but the next responder may not. i like to get the most mv and least muzzle blast so tend to favor longer bbl builds. look at faxon gunner 20". not too heavy. RLGS. good velocity, not too expensive. it won't come close to a Krieger or Brux for accuracy but if you're just hunting to 300 yards or less, it'll do nicely. works well for a lighter weight build, which your daughter will likely appreciate. Faxon also makes the gunner profile in 18" and 16" if i recall correctly. Krieger, Brux, Bartlein, Lilja, all pretty top of the line tubes. not sure if they have a lightweight contour though.
perhaps a better AR wrench than i knows for sure, but i see no reason why you can't use the lower you have already. you'll likely need to pick up some 6.5 Grendel specific magazines to go with the build. check your state big game regs for magazine capacity restrictions for big game hunting. you might be limited to 4 of 5. i picked up some 4rd E-landers that work well. they're as long as the 10 rounders so stick out the bottom of the mag well just the same so you can get your hand on them.

Thanks guys. Yes i will need a couple of mags and a good bolt. I think a 20 inch is longer than i want. 16 would be preferable if they shoot. Not sure what kind of accuracy to expect from a short carbine length barrel but with a top tier barrel it should be adequate. Seen a group buy for lilja idk if that ended or not but they are one i would consider for sure.
As far as mag capacity it is not a problem as far as i know. The only thing at this point i guess is getting the right sized barrel and the right gas port. I think once i decide barrel then the rest of the build will start to fall into place.

The length of your barrel only determines muzzle velocity, not accuracy. Inside of 300 yards, a 16 barrel with a thinner profile rifle would be a great choice for young hunters.
Accuracy comes from the quality of your build. In fact, Ive heard (and tend to believe) that shorter barrels are capable of higher degrees of accuracy because harmonics are less of a factor. I use a 12 grendel pistol as my truck gun because its so easy to handle. Its a cheap rack grade PSA, but shoots around MOA. I wouldnt hesitate to hunt with it at 300 or even 400 yards. Coyotes have met their maker at around 300 with it.

My son used my Grendel from age 6 to 9 Its the perfect youth gun. The stock collapses. Etc. My gun is 16 and its the most accurate thing I shoot I hand load too. Ive got nosler BT 120s going half inch at 200. My suggestion build up a 16 gun. I also highly. I mean highly recommend getting the BOG death grip. My boy has shot countless deer from it in ground/box blinds with mY Grendel. His bolt gun now. And his crossbow It beats any other shooting tripod Ive ever owned!

Thats a really good question that I dont exactly know the answer to oddly enough. Other than it came from Alexander Arms back around 2012 or so. I had purchased the rifle complete from JSE which is local to us here and it was their first Grendel build. Long story short. Alexander arms asked me to send the rifle to them to fix it and it come back to me with a brand new barrel. What flavor other than 16 I do not know Sorry I cant be more helpful there
Bog pod. Its the cats pajamas And just get the aluminum one. My dad has the carbon fiber version and its a lot more for no real world benefit. Save your money on that part

Also in my buying frenzy i ended up ordering some loaded ammo. Also found some sst 123 grain bullets. My wallet is starting to hurt lol. I think i will evilbay a brasscatcher seeing how this ammo is somewhat hard to come by.

Build is almost ready. Recieved my upper,hand guard and magazine yesterday along with some wolf ammo. Still need to order a gas block and tube,optic and assembly tools. Powder enroute is leverevelution and cfe223. Also have some other better quality ammo on order. Cannot find any CCI 450's so i might have to try small pistol primers since i have a few thousand of them.

Big negative on the pistol primer, especially in a AR. Thinner cups are not for the application at hand. Time for patience & or resourcefulness. can you find someone locally to horse trade with?

Received my redding national match die set i ordered and sized and chamfered the mouth on 250 new starline brass.
Ordered an optic https://www.swfa.com/swfa-ss-2-5-10x32-ultralight-rifle-scope-1.html?___SID=U and assembly tools. Hoping this optic is enough, if not i will put it on my 5.56.
Just need a gas block and tube and CCI 450 primers. Then i should be set after this. Hoping to get out this winter and shoot it but we will see.
