True, Colt has also backed out of the msr market. DPMS, while not a great rifle, was very affordable. Bushmaster made their name, as I understand, as being a pretty high quality rifle. The ones I saw several years ago were priced in the $700 - $800 range. Being able to get a functional rifle for less than $600 with out having to build it was important at that time. I have even helped a friend get back into shooting because of the purchase price of DPMS rifles. I know there are many strategies to getting a higher quality rifle but sometimes timing can be someones biggest obstacle.
That's the beauty of the DPMS AR-15, it provides a base to start from when families may not have very much of a budget to begin with. You could find them at Academy for about $550 plus tax, and their fun to shoot. I'd like to get everyone to enjoy going to the range, the lower budget rifles help make that happen. Just my .02
