I don’t like any brand that is on by the freedom group. Bushmaster, DPMS, StormLake Barrels and Tapco will no longer be produced, with the exception of the Bushmaster BA50. DPMS (who sold parts to many AR15 companies) is gone. Bushmaster is gone, including the ACR and the full Bushmaster product line other than the .50 Cal bolt gun. Tapco is gone (millions of SKSs and cheap AR15s sighed in relief). StormLake Barrels is gone. One thing many might not know is that Freedom Group came in and bought the largest manufacturer of AR15 uppers and lowers, LAR Grizzly, in 2012. LAR provided most of the forged receivers to Bushmaster, DPMS, and a laundry list of major AR15 companies up until that time. Freedom Group shuttered the doors of the company after laying everyone off, then combined DPMS and Bushmaster under control of the Remington brand name, shut down the Bushmaster facility in Maine, and moved DPMS down to Huntsville Alabama. This was something I always suspected Remington would do in the same way they did LAR. It will be interesting to see how the market responds to these developments. Is DPMS Still In Business? - Mechnic - 02-18-2020 Very interesting, makes me think the price of our favorite msr is going to sky rocket. Not like dpms had a big foot hold on the market anyways why company's like spa and Anderson and aero can steel every single product they make now and struggle to keep up with demand. Is DPMS Still In Business? - Mechnic - 02-18-2020 True, Colt has also backed out of the msr market. DPMS, while not a great rifle, was very affordable. Bushmaster made their name, as I understand, as being a pretty high quality rifle. The ones I saw several years ago were priced in the $700 - $800 range. Being able to get a functional rifle for less than $600 with out having to build it was important at that time. I have even helped a friend get back into shooting because of the purchase price of DPMS rifles. I know there are many strategies to getting a higher quality rifle but sometimes timing can be someones biggest obstacle. That's the beauty of the DPMS AR-15, it provides a base to start from when families may not have very much of a budget to begin with. You could find them at Academy for about $550 plus tax, and their fun to shoot. I'd like to get everyone to enjoy going to the range, the lower budget rifles help make that happen. Just my .02 Is DPMS Still In Business? - FLshooter - 02-18-2020 They AR15 market is flooded right now.Over-flooded to be exact. No one wants to pay high dollar for something you can get for less .You can get budget AR15 complete for $400 from several manufacturers. And if you buy uppers and lowers separately you can get them for even less. Colt got out of the civilian AR15 market because they realized that there are not many shooters who are willing to pay an extra $600 for a little horsey on the lower reciever. Plenty of affordable receivers and quality parts available at a reasonable price. You are guaranteed a high quality rifle, if you put it together the way you want it. Is DPMS Still In Business? - lazyengineer - 02-19-2020 DPMS is gone. Market won't even notice it. Is DPMS Still In Business? - Sea Leopard - 02-23-2020 Is that DPMS Panther Arms? I can easily agree with both Montana and FLShooter about the addictive and affordable nature of building one's own AR. I can think of no other industry where someone can choose such a wide variety of parts from so many vendors to build a customized product with a relatively modest investment. (Barbie and her accessories cost way more.) I was recently in the "Cave", with the gun safe standing open. My wife came in to ask me something, and stopped at the gun safe and exclaimed; "When did you buy all these rifles?" I looked at the safe and thought for a moment, replied; "I only bought four rifles". Without going into the rest of the discussion where she insulted my math, I can see where she was confused, since I never actually bought a brand name AR rifle - just the bolt action rifles. The rest, I lovingly assembled and fitted, myself. I presently have one in the pre-assembly stage, living in one of LRRPF52's build boxes. That one is waiting for the Muse to strike me as to which barrel to install. When I do decide, the other guns in the safe will have to move over a bit to make room for yet one more AR that never came through the front door as a factory assembled rifle. As a final caveat, affordable does not necessarily imply quality. It pays major dividends to choose your components with intent. Keep an eye on what the final product is going to do to earn its keep. If you're building a blaster, your choices might be simpler, but I still suggest waiting until you have the funds to afford the components worthy of your build. Remember the often repeated adage(s): "Buy cheap, buy twice" and its traveling buddy, "Buy once, cry once". I don't think this has ever crossed my mind in a more simple, succinct, and accurate way. Good way to put it, NF. (Barbie and her accessories cost way more.)I have done both. Started out with budget complete upper and budget complete lower. Started out with stripped upper and lower matched set. The most important component In the upper is the barrel. And the most important components in the lower is the trigger . I either start with a quality barrel and quality trigger or add them as I go. Either way I’m going to end up with a shooter. I have a BCA upper that I dropped a 24 inch heavy Bartlein 6.5 Grendel barrel w/ .936 gas block into. The lower was a PSA $150 MOE special that I dropped a Giessele NM trigger into. Right now it’s doing sub half inch groups. Probably have around $1300 into the complete rifle.Without the scope of coarse. My AR reminds me of my old Chevy Chevelle. No matter how good it was running I always felt the need to tinker with it and change stuff out. And that’s the reason why I always want to start a new build, because I get bored I want something different. Not necessarily better either. Remington shut down the DPMS, Bushmaster, Tapco, and Storm Lake barrels brands/companies. They had no representatives from any of those companies or any of those company logos at SHOT, which was conspicuous since the DPMS and Bushmaster booths were some of the most visible, most-visited booths in the industry making the most AR15-like objects that thousands of distributors and retailers relied on for normal sales. |
