4 hunters attacked over two incidents with 3 injuries and nobody managed to shoot the bear in self defense??? What gives?
This article says that in one incident, that while they had their guns with them, bear spray saved their lives, the spray being used after the bear was on one of the men.

So, apparently, the first attack was a surprise to the hunters.

I would bet the bear was on them before they could react. If a bear is on top of a person, the use of bear spray would be preferable to a firearm and risk shooting the person. Getting complacent in Grizzly country is very common for even native Montana hunters. Seeing a Grizzly bear is not a common occurrence, "and like most people" they will let their guard down. It is amazing how a large animal like a Grizzly can appear out of no where and be on you in a split second. I have seen hunters freeze and look like a dullard when they finally see a bull elk, "and never fire a shot" while I'm yelling shoot, shoot, shoot, SHOOT. Imagine how their minds would freeze and try to process a huge apex animal charging full speed at them. People react differently to stresses.
