I've heard they also recommend wearing a bell so the bear hears you coming. Interesting note, I also heard researchers have found that black bear scat typically contains hair and bones. In these areas though, grizzly bear scat typically contains bells and smells like pepper spray.
On a serious note though, some folks I know around Worland, Wyoming told me it's pretty common in their area to have tied up horses attacked by grizzllies after having fired a shot.

Haven't ran into any griz, but did have a mountain lion come within about 80 yards of me.. he seemed a bit surprised when I stood up and he finally noticed me watching him.

My son had that happen to him packing an elk out in the dark. Could hear the bear following him across the creek. He reported it, the fish and game went back the next day and killed it.

4 hunters attacked over two incidents with 3 injuries and nobody managed to shoot the bear in self defense??? What gives?
This article says that in one incident,that while they had their guns with them, bear spray saved their lives, the spray being used after the bear was on one of the men.

I would bet the bear was on them before they could react. If a bear is on top of a person, the use of bear spray would be preferable to a firearm and risk shooting the person. Getting complacent in Grizzly country is very common for even native Montana hunters. Seeing a Grizzly bear is not a common occurrence, "and like most people" they will let their guard down. It is amazing how a large animal like a Grizzly can appear out of no where and be on you in a split second. I have seen hunters freeze and look like a dullard when they finally see a bull elk, "and never fire a shot" while I'm yelling shoot, shoot, shoot, SHOOT. Imagine how their minds would freeze and try to process a huge apex animal charging full speed at them. People react differently to stresses.

People do react differently under stress, no doubt. My guess is that these were not terribly experienced hunters and/or not terribly experienced in the area, sort of like your dullards.
As for pepper spray being the best option, that would depend on shot angle. If you are getting close enough to use pepper spray, you are getting close enough to chose your shot angle. Not saying the hunter made the wrong choice in the first incident. The bear spray worked. I am just surprised that with that many hunters and guns, nobody managed to use a gun in self defense.
Yes, even cattle and bison can appear "out of nowhere," particularly when you are not paying attention, and be quite stealthy about it as well.
So not only are humans pretty much defenseless animals with soft underbelly all over (no thick fur, hide, claws, sharp teeth, super strong muscles, great speed, great hearing, great sense of smell, but pretty good eyesight), far too many of them also have lost their ability to react to threats.
