Hey EMB, it's good to see another ETN boy join the horde. It would be pretty hard to beat the price of a J&T upper. In a 20" barrel, I would probably go with a 1x9 twist. Unless you want to try some 140 grain bullets. Either way, in these hills, the shots are pretty short and the Grendel beats a .30-30. Well, after 100 yards or so. 
As a starter Grendel, I'd get the J&T and a bunch of bullets, primers and powder. Later on, I bet there will be more and more choices.
Eventually you'll know exactly what you're looking for and you can build it yourself. I can help you with that or, for that matter, I know someone out your way who builds ARs and can give you a hand.
