I used one on both of mine because I had a new one for my new Owen Works barrel build and I just used the one that was already on the complete BCA upper that I replaced the bird cage. It is not needed because you do not need to time it is what I was told when I called to check about it at Joebob. As far as a compensator the Kaw Valley linear compensator is not meant to reduce recoil but it does project the muzzle blast down range instead of back at you busting your ears in case you have to shoot without ear protection. It may reduce recoil slightly but on a Grendel there is not much recoil anyway. I made the mistake of shooting a 7mm STW out of a shooting house once that had a muzzle brake on it without ear protection. Will not be doing that again. Could not hear for over a week.
