I know that some of you guys are running the Kaw Valley compensator. Did you use a crush washer when installing? Mine didn't come with one. On the KVP website they state that a washer is optional on the pistol caliber models, but they say nothing about a washer on the centerfire rifles.

I used one on both of mine because I had a new one for my new Owen Works barrel build and I just used the one that was already on the complete BCA upper that I replaced the bird cage. It is not needed because you do not need to time it is what I was told when I called to check about it at Joebob. As far as a compensator the Kaw Valley linear compensator is not meant to reduce recoil but it does project the muzzle blast down range instead of back at you busting your ears in case you have to shoot without ear protection. It may reduce recoil slightly but on a Grendel there is not much recoil anyway. I made the mistake of shooting a 7mm STW out of a shooting house once that had a muzzle brake on it without ear protection. Will not be doing that again. Could not hear for over a week.

Thanks, 1Shot! I'm kinda disappointed that there may be no reduction in recoil. But like you infer, maybe it won't be a big deal anyway. The muzzle blast is a bigger issue for me! I'm crippled from polio that I had as a kid, and have to shoot from my off-road golf cart. And depending on the gun, the blast from underneath the top can be earth-shattering, although hearing protection works for my ears, LOL.
By the way, I also asked Kaw Valley through their website this morning. But since I wanted to install the comp today, I later decided to also ask around in the forum. Kaw Valley replied awhile ago, saying pretty much the same thing that you did - it's not necessary but optional. Impressive that they reply to customers that quickly, even on Sunday!

I like them allot!
No crush washer needed, but no harm using one if you prefer.

I, too have and like them a lot. As for using the washer I don't, why, cause besides not needing to it looks cleaner that way.

Are these hollow inside, or do they have channels that direct gases from the muzzle and out the front?

Just looked this up. What’s the difference between this and a flash can or flaming pig? I had one similar that came with my bump stock for my 15-22 to help add recoil for the bump stock.

I don't have any experience with either but this is very light, 2 oz., and more than long enough to pin to a 14.5 barrel to make it legal

In theory they would do little to nothing to reduce recoil. I certainly have not noticed any INCREASE in recoil... But I surely notice reduced noise and absolutely less offensive muzzle blast.
I am waiting on one form them now for my 450 Bushmaster and when that's ready to ship, I will be grabbing another for a 300 BLK.

Probably a bit unfair to say there is no recoil reduction in these linear-type brakes. Linears reduce recoil but they are not as efficient as more traditional designs that channel gasses out the side. There is surface area around the ports which the gasses push against. What you lose in recoil reduction efficiency however you gain in noise reduction.
I have used the Troy Medieval (linear) which is a similar design to the Kaw Valley. Great for light recoiling calibers with short barrels where noise reduction is more important than recoil.
