FWIW, I have a Nikon Prostaff 5 4.5-18x40 on a 20" SS upper. I've taken it as far as 600 yards ( take it up to 12 - 14x). But I think I would have been better off with a fixed 16x or maybe 20x (for going as far as 1,000 yards). Just couldn't pass up on the bargain price the Nikon was.
