"Stopping power" really? People still use that term? You take the most effective weapon that you have and can use effectively, and you apply it until the threat has stopped, or you lose, either one. That is the rule. Yes, it is nice to identify what tends to work better, but it doesn't always, so what are you good at using? Use that. If you get better with something more powerful, or something becomes more effective, reevaluate. Stopping power means nothing against a meth crazed guy taking dozens of .45 rounds in the chest. You find what works well for you, and you continue to improve it throughout your life.
