BFT, Coolbeans, I will still be good then till the new extractors get here. I have 3 of your older bolts right now, and an AA hard use I got from that group buy on I think the first or second board when we were still all using IMI brass to make Grendel from.

So max pressure is capped at 52,000 psi due to weak bolt lugs.

These new bolts are 97% vs 50% thick.

Can we run the 6.5 Grendel hotter? How high? 55,000 psi, 60,000 psi?

I don't have a pressure gage anyways. If a max load of VARGET was 24.8gr; with this new bolt is it now 25.3gr?

Or is this just a safer bolt at current load data?

For me I won’t chase velocity with the 6.5 Grendel, regardless of particular bolt in an AR-15 or a bolt gun. If velocity and foot pounds of energy are your thing there are better cartridges. I like the mild recoil, accuracy and small amount powder used by the 6.5 Grendel. Reloading components are hard enough to find plus with higher prices I don’t want to trash my brass with hot loads.


Everyone is welcome to their opinion. If I make a mistake I want that margin of safety from the SAAMI spec 6.5 Grendel.

Are these bolts pressure tested? If so, to what pressure, and is it once or many times? Example: 10 rounds at 80kpsi or one round at 80kpsi.

I ask because you seem to be a small shop, making big improvements. I assume you are not milling these yourself but instead directing a larger manufacturer that already makes bolts? Do they pressure test? Thank you.

Started a separate post, inspired by that question. I personally suspect the BFT sourced bolts to be stronger than baseline, and that to be stronger than the 52000 PSI rating by a good bit. No test data or anything to back that up, aside from a lack of anyone actually breaking Grendel bolts in a long time, despite the hot pressures many run

No, bolts are not pressure tested. Yes, I am a small shop making big improvements, but to be scientifically rigorous you can't test just one bolt to failure (5,000 rounds at $1 each is $5,000?) and call it done. You'd have to test a statistically significant quantity to get the real picture. This would probably be a government-level project.

The only claim I make is that I'm putting as much steel in my Ultrabolt bolt body and Ultrabolt extractor as I can and still have it run reliably in standard AR15 barrel extensions. Take that for what it's worth.

And so you're gonna get the best 65G/6A bolt in the business — bar none — at what I hope will be the most competitive price.

Regarding the in-stock date for these, all I'm waiting for is the extractors, and as of today manufacturer says, "should be shipping to you sometime next week." But he's said that three weeks in a row....

Any word on the new extractors?

Old Bob, and all, got my new extractors in and ran through them with a fine tooth comb, including sectioning them in various places to confirm dimensions, and — lo, and behold — I found a manfacturer's error. They had NOT made the claw section as thick as I had specified in a certain area; it's standard thickness. Had discussions with them, and found out the company that makes the tooling for them had incorrectly dimensioned a collett. Sometimes, I hate being the pioneer ... lot of arrows out there!

Anyway, these extractors have four of my five improvements, so they're better than the previous version, but they're still not the ultimate. Some manufacturers cut corners, foregoing the radiuses in the extractor groove (that prevent the stress riser typically responsible for breaking off the claw) and the shot peening — these fix that.

What I'm gonna do is sell these as is and NOT raise the price to $79.95 cuz they're still not the ultimate that I've been promising. But, you still get the improved Ultrabolt body with a better-than-standard extractor for $59.95. You can pay twice as much, or more, but you won't get a better 6.5 Grendel bolt.
