I have to admit I'm kind of snickering here. Combine some of the comments on Proof barrels and some of the comments on a JP Operating System being bling with some of the naysaying, and well - it can be done with the bling! With that said, I do probably have close to $2500 in Drogon and if I were to do it again, I would go with a different receiver set / handguard which would be more money, but hey - it works! Parts list is in the description.

I watched every shot hit without the target leaving the sight picture and after the first couple of shots, I actually had to wait for the sound to come back - and I was holding the vertical in the reticle. I've had a buddy with very little LR experience and without the patience to wait for the sound to come back get 3 in a row with it at 1k in a 15mph cross wind (3 mil windage hold on a half mil target). I find recoil to be a lot less than 308 and the weight is around 12 lbs scoped compliments of the 3 lb barrel and MBA-1 which is probably a pound less than a PRS. Even though its light, it is a heavy contour barrel so the barrel absorbs recoil much like a bull barrel - maybe even more. Heat also isn't a problem since Proof's claims of heat dissipation are for real. I've also said that I'm only buying Superlative gas blocks moving forward and this thread has only confirmed my conviction.
The only real problem with parts incompatibility arises with receivers / handguard / LPK. If the upper receiver / lower receiver / handguard are all sourced from the same manufacturer (which can be done with Aero / Mega / Spikes / 2A as well as others), Aero and Spikes make LPKs and I'm sure Mega and 2A could tell you who to use with a phone call. Everything else will fall into place as long as you stick to DPMS pattern.
And with the primer horror stories out there, I wonder how many involve an R+2 gas system (the only way to go), a JP bolt and ammo that isn't from Prime (which is friggen hot!. It pushes the same Norma 130 GT that I do at 2800 at 2950 out of my barrel).
With that said, a decent 308 could be put together at a very reasonable price. One of my many projects is putting together a beater 308 for practicing compromised positions and recoil management at mid range (no need to wear out the Proof barrel on targets in my zip code). Had some parts lying around, picked up an M5E1 builders set from Schuyler for $290 in November and picked up a 20" semibull BHW barrel from True Sporting Arms at 35% off. Looks like the one I got is sold out, but they still have some great deals with them now at 50% off:
