The best pricing I can find for both has the Vortex at about 50% more expensive. Is it worth 50% more? If so, what makes it worth the extra money? BTW: thanks, this is very helpful.

While the glass in the Monarch is good, the glass in the Monarch Gold is better, and the Monarch X is even better still.

The Vortex PST scopes have glass that is comparable to the Monarch X, and some people claim it is better. I certainly think it is at least a match for my Nikon Tactical, (which became the Monarch X).

The PST's also have lighted (lit?) reticles, and while I don't use mine much, when I need it, it is critical.

For me, the difference is worth it. OF course, I'm the guy who has a Nightforce on my other Grendel, so I'm probably a lousy reference point!

One of the main features the PST line of Vortex scopes have that most other scopes don't is the user-configurable zero-stop. To get zero-stop on other brands, you need to spend well over $1200 in most cases. Vortex also introduced a cool feature on their turrets with fiber-optic tubes that let you know how many turns you have made.

The turrets also are very positive in click feel value, and the reticle options for a factory scope line don't force the end-user into something they don't want. The turrets also match the reticle value, whether you choose Mils or MOA, which is how it should be. I wouldn't have taken Vortex seriously if I hadn't first seen them advertised on the benchrest forums. I looked a little further, and liked more and more of what I saw. After purchasing a standard Viper 6.5-20x44 Mil Dot just to see how it held up, and to use as a floater if it had strong gears, I was thoroughly-impressed with the product and company as a whole.

I still wish I had that scope, but a friend offered me something I couldn't pass, so I didn't. I have a Viper PST 2.5-10x44 Mil now, and it's a great scope. I'm actually using it on a .260 Rem AR-10 for the time being, and it is a fine optic for even that rifle/caliber/profile. It won't be my last. For the glass, clicks, reticle, zero-stop, and other features, you won't be able to touch another scope for less than twice the price of a Viper PST-just the way the market is right now.

very interesting. Can you explain "zero-stop" for me please. This is a term I am unfamiliar with.

Once the scope is zeroed, the knob can be set to stop at the bottom of its travel as the zero of the rifle.

Some scopes will vary in how it is accomplished but the idea remains the same.

This way you do not have to worry about how far up you went because to return to zero you turn the scope knob to zero.

Here you go. This just popped up on the radar. It may look old school, but I can't stress the degree of it's quality. If you can snag it for under $120 and don't like it, I'll buy it from you for what you have into it. If I don't see you bidding on it as it gets close to the end, I will bid on it. I don't want to be bidding against you and not know it. That would be defeating the purpose of getting you into a nice 30mm scope, for an affordable price. I already have one on my Browning .300 Win Mag, but I'd like to get one on my G3.

Edit: If you seriously want it as inexpensively as possible, don't start bidding on it early. That's a guarantee of driving it up, possibly beyond what you're looking to spend because of the emotional nature of auctions. A successful hunter waits for the optimum shot.
