I believe that bullets of 100 to 115 grains were the most efficient for the Grendel case and the AR-15.

Highest velocity and given a decent design, more than capable to 500 meters.

Am sure that pressures have something to do with it too.

I suspect also it has to do with different priorities of terminal performance, between the two. Military values hits more than it values hit lethality. Same reason the 6mm ARC has better military appeal - it will shoot flatter, and have less recoil, allowing a faster follow-up shot. Which in theory will increase hit probability. It does so at the expense of lethality when it gets there, compared to a heavier 6.5mm bullet. For most civilian general purpose and hunting, 123 gr is the better bullet. For military ball application and target shooting, 107 SMK is in some ways the better bullet. JMHO.

I think you need to link me to the DoD requirements that put hit probability above lethality. Or vice versa.

Designers come up with bullets that meet military accuracy and lethality requirements. They also have to ensure that pressures remain within specs over a gigantic range of climactic conditions.

S.O. has used a lot of different cartridges throughout their history. All were intended for specific purposes and no doubt the 6 ARC was chosen because of some specific need. My bet it is to penetrate body armor at longer distances.

Never a good idea to compare match ammo using bullets designed solely for exterior efficiency to ball ammo that needs to be lethal on the battlefield.
