For those who have experience with both stocks, do you have a clear preference in terms of initial fit and quality? Would one of the two stocks be quieter in the hunting environment? I've had factory plastic stocks that are loud if they get slapped by brush. The Adirondacks are thick mature forest so this is common. I have closed cell foam that can be cut and shaped to fill a hollow butt stock to help in this regard. Are one of the two stiffer than the other and do the stocks typically come in at advertised weight? While this is obviously a very individual thing, do one of the two stocks stand out in terms of ergos? I'm 6'1" tall with long arms. While I want a very light hunting rifle, I don't want it to feel like a child's .22lr.

I appreciate your help and look forward to this project. Years ago (long before the 6ARC) I wanted to build a 6PPC repeater to hunt deer with. At that time there were no actions that would reliably feed the PPC and I didn't want to build a single shot. I ended up rebarreling a Sako Vixen to 6x45 and have really enjoyed that rifle. I guess I'll satisfy my PPC desire with the Grendel.

In any case, I'm back in the fold. I bought a 12.5" Noveske barrel and was so happy with the results, I picked up a 20" as well. Tomorrow I'll have some chrono numbers out of the 20.

The 12.5" has put up some numbers I'm very pleased with. Priv Part 120 BTHP and Hornady 123 SST both run a hair over 2300 FPS and Underwood 110 "Controlled Chaos" makes 2400.

More importantly, the accuracy is outstanding. My primary application is pigs in south Texas, so I'm using a 3.5x ACOG with the big red chevron/circle which is well calibrated to get you out to 300. I was pleased to see a 1.5" 5 shot group with the Underwood at 200 yards using the ACOG when initially trying out various types of ammo. The PP and Hornaday also shot well, reliably 1" ish at 100 with the Hornady, 1.25-1.5" with the PPU.

Then I managed to break the ACOG (!) and while it went out for repair I slapped a 3-18X on top out of sheer curiosity and was very pleased to see that off a rest at 100 yards, they rifle was shooting about .5" with the Underwood ammo.

I can only imagine what it's capable of with a real shooter off a legit bench.

Thus far, a couple hundred rounds and zero malfunctions.

The 20" is wearing an old USO SR6 1.5-6 which is to say it is very much set up for faster and closer but initial 40 rounds seem to indicate accuracy is excellent and kills pigs dead. Out to 300, it yielded a 3.5" group which I assure was a whole lot of user error. At some point I may put on a higher magnification to see what it can really do.

In short, the run of those barrels appears to have yielded fast and accurate results. I wish they'd made a 14.5" but the 12.5" is fast enough.]]>

Assembly was nothing tricky EXCEPT the weird 2 part system that Odinworks did for the barrel nut. You have an alignment block that you use a pin to line up with the BCG so that gas tube is aligned perfectly, and this block threads onto the upper receiver. Then there is a second nut that you actually torque to spec to secure the barrel. I am used to the vagueries of shims and fighting with the alignment if it is needed. Aside from being weird it works though.

I picked up 2 boxes of Hornady black for break in, then a box of Hornady SST, then stopped because I was waiting on 200 rounds of Hornady Frontier. It started at 2.5 inch groups at 100 yards, then as I started shooting the less accurate Frontier FMJ it tightened up each time I shot, where I am seeing 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. As I accumulate brass I am preparing for a handload with CFE223 and 123gr SSTs, though I also have a little bit of H335 to test.

I am looking for an 18” barrel, as a compromise between the ballistics of a longer (20” or greater) barrel, and the handiness and maneuverability of the 16”. I am looking for a mid weight rifle, possibly for hunting, but mostly will be used for targets/ steel at 200-500 yds. Plan on 110-130 gr bullets almost exclusively. Thinking a heavier barrel(for accuracy) but fluted for weight savings. Seems like 1 in 8 twist is the way to go.

So would like recommendations from the brain trust as to who makes a good barrel. I would like below MOA accuracy(on the days that I can shoot that well). I will be reloading once I get brass and dies. Don’t want to spend a fortune, but want a good barrel.

Gas length- any advantage to mid-length vs rifle length vs carbine length?

Gas block- any real advantage to an adjustable gas block(have one on the 5.56, but have not had much chance to adjust it once I got it working). If you have an adjustable gas block, do you adjust it for temperature, etc, or just leave it once you have it working? Do they usually stay adjusted, or do you have to play with them like the carburetors on a 60’s era Austin Healy or MG(yes, I am that old!).

Any suggestions or opinions on barrel manufacturers/ barrel length, gas block, gas tube length, or any other things I need to consider, would be appreciated. I have searched the forum and found good info on Faxon, Precision Firearms, Lilja, Wilson Combat, and others, but would like any other input available.
