It’s 0500 and I’m loading the truck up for a full day at the range….

Shooting my brand new NF SHV FFP scope at 200 and 300 meters. I shot it at 100 yards Friday.

Going to concentrate on my bag setup, trigger pull and follow through on every single shot today.

If I don’t have a great NPA, I am NOT going to muscle the gun on target, I am going to start all over and build the position again.

Focus on breathing and calling every shot today….

Shooting an AR G gun, Starline brass, CCI 450, 90 gr. TNT over 8208.

Stay Safe,
There are others like devices that have came out since the IOTA.
My side focus scope will go down to 15 yards and I have that much room inside my house to practice so I wouldn't need a IOTA device for that but what intrigued me was the use of a picture of a actual range with various targets at different distances.
Also in the vid they practice prone, kneeling, standing and use a mock up barricade.
There was a brief mention of using a laptop or computer screen that had moving targets or pop ups that sounds like fun.
Anyone doing this kind of thing? If so please post your results and methods used, especially what targets or vids or computer programs you shoot at.
This is something to do during bad weather (winter) as well as getting daily trigger time.

Hello to all,

This is my first post (other than an intro in the new member area). I was wondering if anyone knows of any formal training in the central Florida area. I am not prior service and have zero formal training of any kind. Looking for some place to learn good shooting habits and skills. I am a very informal shooter, but have been gaining more and more interest in learning to shoot with a higher level of skill. As i am approaching middle age, I am not really looking for combat-styled training (although not ruling it out either as skill is skill i suppose).

If anyone has any experiences with formal training in my area, I would appreciate any information you might have.

Thanks,
Now this target is rated to handle up to 30-06 my little 300 sac blk is no where near the high end of that spectrum, anywaysthe vertical support bent and the lower horizontal support bent and broke at a weld seam.
This just won't do, any sudgestions or should I just go get a bowling pin lol?

I have hunted with .30-06 for 25 years and had great success. The first rifle i hunted with was my Fathers Rem. 700 and it had a super light trigger pull which I was good with. A few years ago I inherited a Ruger 77, the trigger is much heavier and I shot it a little and hunted with it the last few seasons, however I have developed or possibly had already developed a flinch when I shoot. So bad I started missing deer at close range. This has led me to the Grendel for a lower recoil alternative and a better trigger. I purchased a Howa 65G and am loving shooting it. I am working on the flinch with snap caps and lots of rounds down the range. I am able to shoot 1" groups at 100 with it but still have issues with the flinch at times. I recently took it hunting for the first time and killed a hog at 60yds with a perfect head shot. This was after trying to shoot with the safety on and flinching badly, so reminding myself to breath correctly and pull smoothly I nailed it. That evening I had another hog at 60 yrs and was worried they were going to bolt so I made a rather quick shot and missed. I assume I flinched again bc I didn't tell myself not to.

How do you work on the flinch for live targets and quick shots? Any tricks to fix the flinch? Like I said I can control it now at the range and do fine with snap caps its just the real life situations that it seems to come back. I used to shoot archery a lot and developed target panic, I was able to mentally correct that with practice holding on target and shooting to different counts mixing up how long I held on target before releasing. So I know I can overcome this too, just looking for advice on the best way?

First off I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum. If not please feel free to move it to the right place. A little short history on me. I'm 62 years old and have been shooting on and off for at least 40 years. More handgun than rifle by far and up until I built my Grendel had never shot any further than about 75 yards with most of it being plinking with a 22. I've been to the range a coupe times now and reached out to 200 yards last week. I was pleased but know I have problems. I am shooting off a concrete shooting bench and use a Harris bipod and a squeeze bag in my left hand under the stock. My shots have a tendency to string up. First shot is usually close to the POA. Successive shots end up in a somewhat vertical pattern above the bullseye. I try to "load" the bipod but after each shot the sight picture is to the right every time. I am going to try to set up my GoPro next time to "watch" me as I shoot but I am hoping someone can give me some hints as to what I'm doing wrong.

This is something I've been thinking about after my last outing with the Grendel.

Basically, I want to start a fun challenge where we see what our capabilities and limitations are with our rifles, given realistic conditions, time constraints, and different classes of rifles.

You have two main divisions:

UKD- Unknown Distance

KD- Known Distance

For UKD, you take a 12" steel plate out to an unknown distance, the farther it is, the more points allotted. Set the plate in, ensuring you have a clear line of sight to it from your shooting position.

Walk back to the position. On a shot timer, with your rifle in hand, hit the start, then get into position, determine the range to the target, account for your trajectory and wind, and make a 1st-round hit on the target. Use a 1 minute par time.

The number of yards = number of points
Number of seconds not used out of 1 minute = points
1st round hit = 100 points
2nd round hit = 50 points
3rd round hit = 10 points

Standing Position = + 100 points
Kneeling Position = + 80 points
Seated position = + 50 points
Prone or bench position = + 0 points

The shorter your barrel is, the more points you get:
24-28" barrels = 0 extra points
20" = 5 points
18" = 10 points
16" = 15 points
14.5" = 20 points
12.5-13" = 30 points
10.5"-11.5" = 50 points

For Known Distance, follow the same procedures, however, use an 8" target. This is for those who don't have access to open terrain where they can set out targets, and are limited to what is available at local ranges.

The shorter your barrel is, the more points you get:
24-28" barrels = 0 extra points
20" = 5 points
18" = 10 points
16" = 15 points
14.5" = 20 points
12.5-13" = 30 points
10.5"-11.5" = 50 points

For Known Distance, follow the same procedures, however, use an 8" target. This is for those who don't have access to open terrain where they can set out targets, and are limited to what is available at local ranges.

All – finally had the opportunity to take the Grendel out to 1100yds today. IT WAS AWSOME!!! I have been trying to find a day to go out to Bangsteel (http://bangsteel.com/) and spend the day with Dan Newberry for the last several months. Dan is a great guy, very knowledgeable about ballistics and long range shooting. Prior to today, the farthest I had been able to shoot my Grendel was 300yds. While I was confident in my gear, the only time in my life I had shot at farther than 500m was with a scout sniper on my shoulder firing a Barrett .50 (2 shots) or a M 40A3 (10 shots) on a sniper training range. It has, unfortunately been a very long time since I was able to do that. (Sorry, no pics!)

Gear Used

AA 19.5 Grendel with Leopold MkIV 4-14 with Burris A-PERP. Lower is AA with an AA Tactical Blade trigger, carbine length buffer tube with Magpul CTR stock and Enidine buffer. El Cheapo bipod, stock bag, and factory Hornady 123gr A-max.

About the course

I did a one day private clinic with Dan. We spent about an hour going over the finer points of shooting at long range, including talking about mils vs MOA, angle cosine, and the effects of wind and how to adjust for the wind, and range estimation. Dan is a firm beliver in keeping it simple, and I appreciated several of the tricks he showed me, as well as reminding me about a lot of things I had forgotten since I was a range coach 25 years ago. Then it was off to the range.

The range is right outside of Bland VA with steel targets ranging from 200yds to 1100yds with live cows spread throughout (they stayed away from the targets, so no veal). After confirming the rifles 100yd zero, we started working our way out to 1000yds. The steel targets varied in size from 12” to 24”, with some animal silhouettes at unknown distances. Dan served as my spotter and we talked about the data to put on the rifle, and he helped me make changes as needed. Once we got on steel at 1000yds, we decided to see if there was enough elevation on the rifle to hit 1100, and there was – barely! We then went back and confirmed the data at each range.

We did not use any wind anemometers and the wind was tough to judge. Never got very strong, but varied in speed from about 8 to 15mph, and would switch from a full value to a half value. It was also swirling in the gullies where some of the targets were, so there were more than a few missed shots.

We then moved to range estimation on some of the animal silhouettes (no laser range finder, based ranges on size of animal silhouette/what the animal was). I was about 50% for first round hits here, so I have some work to do.

Overall, it was a great day and I am glad I went. Dan is a great guy – down to earth as well as knowledgeable– and I would recommend his courses if you want some good training or going to the competitions he puts on for anyone who wanted to get some 1000yds steel shooting in.
