Hog here. Grandson arriving

All of a sudden, our place is overrun with hogs of all sizes. The grandson (with the 6.5G) is coming to hunt on Friday. Right now the rifle is sighted in with 95 gr V-max, but the gun is in my safe and I’m thinking I should sight it in with the 123 gr SST rounds. That seems logical, unless you convince me to stay with the 95 gr V-max. This gun has no pig shooting history, so we have no results info.

I would move to the 123 SST. It performs well on hogs. DoubleNaughtSpy/CarpeSus a member on the forum has a 100+ videos on YouTube proving their performance. I don't think the 95 VMAX will penetrate through to the vitals...but I've never tried them personally.

I mainly use the 129SST for hunting as my rifle likes them better.

I went ahead and decided to set it for the 123’s, but happily it was already set for that bullet. I had forgotten. The 95 gr shoots 2.5” low, and I had adjusted the elevation turret to compensate. Moved the turret back to zero and we are in business. That was too easy, so I shot it some more just because.

The last pig he shot was a pretty big one, and he used the 223 AR. I forgot to tell him to shoot the hog in the ear, so he parked the first round (63 gr Sierra SMP) in the lungs, which got the hog moving slowly away. Second round in the guts, third in the ear, and fourth in the dirt. He said it was the most fun he ever had hunting, but hinted that a more potent round might be good - hence the Grendel. Yep, he’ll likely have a blast. If he has enough patience, there might be 10 or 15 hogs of various sizes around the feeder, so plenty of targets of opportunity.
