Which Plug & Play Grendel Upper - Larue UU or CMMG Endeavor?

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a quality, accurate 6.5 Grendel Upper.

So far, I've narrowed my choices down to:

Several forum members own the LaRue ultimate upper but I have yet to see anyone do a report on the CMMG 6.5 Grendel.


That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with CMMG as all the products I own from CMMG have been gtg.

The LaRue UU is a better value since you get the complete upper as well as a great trigger and everything else you need to be up and running other than a stripped lower and magazines. Downside, lead time on Grendels (or any UU) is 2-3 months on average. My order from 7/17 is still in limbo, for example.

CMMG probably has uppers in stock, or can have them to you much quicker than LaRue, since they're a volume manufacturer, and they have authorized resellers that might also have inventory. They also don't have Mark LaRue baggage, for what that's worth.

And don't let the accuracy snobs deter you unless you're going to take it to Camp Perry or really need to whip out your 1/4" benchrest groups on Instagram.

Well since the OP asked for a upper that he could use for hunting, target playing and competitions. I would say that removes the rack grade barrels from the list that come in the large and cmmg uppers.

But yes I am a accuracy snob.

Please tell me you are not advising the OP to deliberately handicap himself with mediocre equipment - by suggesting there is something wrong with striving for accuracy - on a shooting forum.

Help us understand your logic please. If shooting is not about maximising the potential to hit a target then what is it?

The last part could have been worded differently (better) with some real world info on what can be expected from one or both of the uppers in question.

OP, I don’t have any first hand experience with either brand, but was unimpressed by some group pictures Mark LaRue shot and posted. I honestly expect more out of my PSA 12” with factory ammo. If 1 1/2” groups are good enough for you, most any reputable company will build an upper that will be good enough. If you want a really good shooter, you’ll need to go with a match grade barrel. I’ve had rack grade barrels shoot really well, but you can’t expect that. You just feel lucky when it happens. Beware though, a match grade barrel alone won’t guarantee a match grade weapon. It takes an entire system to shoot well reliably.

I bought a new LaRue barrel and bolt carrier group and it consistently groups just under 1 MOA with the Hornady America Gunner 123 BTHP load. Didn’t know what to expect from the barrel. I have been pleasantly surprised.
