Thanks for letting me join the crew, recently! I have a question. Since I have time to make some changes before I assemble my 6.5 Grendel. The Grendel is new to me, as is the AR over all. I have two builds (5.56 and 300 BO) under my belt and I’m branching out. This will likely be a hunting rifle, but I may try to stretch it’s legs a little and learn/do some long distance shooting.

My build list thus far:
Upper - BCM4
Lower - SOLGW Angry patriot
Trigger - Larue MBT1S (bought before I thought about any long range shooting)
LPK - BCM
BCG - RCA (non-titanium)
Barrel - 20” Grendel Hunter Satern
Handguard - 15” Stngr Rptr
Buffer - BCM A5
Charging handle - BCM 3x3
Stock - VLTOR EMOD
Optic - TBD but I love Vortex and I’ve been interested in trying PA (is there an ACSS reticle that works with 6.5G?)
I may add a bipod but that is kind of superfluous right now.

My question is kind of ambiguous, but does anyone see anything there that is suboptimal for the 6.5? Anything glaring that needs changed? Any quality of life changes I should make before it all comes together? Also, this is my first traditional lower (goodness, I love that threaded bolt catch screw in the Aero M4E1 enhanced uppers) and I marred my upper around the bolt catch a fair bit. So this gun is going to get rattle canned. (Another first for me!)

I appreciate all of your time and insight and look forward to learning for you guys and eyeballin' all the sweet setups out there.

Looks good but for 2 things.

Pick a diffrent barrel. One not made by satan/liberty or BCA, if your budget allows pick up a custom barrel, you will be Mich better off when you try to stretch it's legs.

Second thing lose the bipod for shooting distance and get a good set of front and rear bags.

Stick with the vortex scope.

The bipod is less for the long distance and more for finding a happy place to rest it in a blind, but it's not an absolute. That's a maybe later problem.


And another general question, does the Grendel get finicky when suppressed? I've purchased a Q Thunder Chicken and she's in jail right now, but it is my plan and hope that the can will go on all of my rifles.

For shooting suppressed, I’d add a quality adjustable gas block to the build. I’m researching what kinds now too for my build.

Do a fourm search here about satern/liberty, that will tell all you need to know. What I will say is satern/liberty, BCA, arstoner are not sammi chambered. They use a mutt chamber.

Can't answer the can question. I don't and won't own one.

Never heard of any problems with a bi-pod on a free float hand guard before. Mine was fine for getting a 200 yard zero.


The .308 ACSS reticle should work with 6.5 Grendel. Message Dimitri (PA owner) and he should clarify that for you.

Why do liberty buyers always label their barrels satern/liberty? They are made entirely different.

The one thing they do have in common is the lying ownership that sold a group of people barrels that were supposed to be saami spec but turned out to be some bs chambering.

Craddock Precision has in-house brand 6.5 Grendel barrels I believe they’re under $300 delivered. The barrel blanks are rock creek button rifled. I installed several for friends and various calibers. You’d be very happy with that barrel and the wait time is around eight weeks and he will communicate and let you know what’s going on with your order.

I guess I fell for all the hype and reviews. I purchased my complete upper from Grendel Hunter with an 18" Stainless Fluted barrel by Liberty. I found review after review where guys were shooting 1 moa or better with this same rifle from Grendel Hunter dot com. I feel that everything is very good quality. I am not up to speed on how not being saami spec will effect my rifle. Due to the shelter in place in Florida I have not had a chance to even see how it shoots. I don't feel very confident that I can shoot 1 moa or better at 100 yards. The rifle was purchased for hog hunting in Florida and Texas.

Don’t sweat about your Grendel Hunter upper and non SAAMI spec barrel. Take your Grendel Hunter to the range and see how it shoots. Grendel Hunter has many satisfied customers. If you encounter a problem I suspect Grendel Hunter will try to rectify the problem.

Saturn can manufacture high quality cut rifled barrels. Saturn’s cheaper line of button rifled barrels are the liberty line which are rack grade barrels. The 18” mid length gas liberty 6.5 Grendel II barrels are generally over gassed because they have large gas ports. If your going to use a suppressor I suggest you use an adjustable gas block or adjustable gas carrier.

The biggest difference in a Liberty Grendel II chamber is in the barrel throat. The Liberty barrels use a traditional throat (not compound like the SAAMI chamber) and a long leade. I have friends who purchased Liberty barrels from Brownell’s and the first batch commonly had short chambers. Satern/Liberty has sold a lot of Grendel II chambered barrels but they are not something I would buy.

Everything works well and no problems with loading or bolt cycling with Hornady and PPU brass cased ammo. They only have a 25 yard range for rifle so I did not check how accurate the rifle was only worked on trying to zero my scope. I am waiting to go to a local outdoor range that has a 50 , 100 and 200 yard.

I just purchased a 2nd handguard from Grendel Hunter. I've communicated with the owner through Email a few times. I suspect you'll be very satisfied with your purchase & if you're not, he'll make it right.

Thanks. I will assume WC is Wilson Combat? Are they 1/2 moa , 1 moa ? Like I said before I am not a match or competition shooter so I did not go searching for a match grade barrel. I wanted a reliable rifle accurate enough for hunting at 50 to 100 yards.

They are match grade and will give you headaches compared to cheaper barrels.

There's nothing wrong with prone from a bipod for long range especially if it's on a free float rail/handguard. A good rear bag is a necessity though. Avoid the magpul bipod, they just wobble too much and don't lock down hard.




Also you don't need an adjustable gas to run suppressed, I don't use one and am not terribly overgassed. They can be prone to issues themselves. I prefer to just tune the gun with buffers and springs to whatever load you will run the most.

I have owned two Liberty barrels. Both shot/shoot under 1” At 100 yards with quality factory ammo and hand loads. There’s a lot of bad blood on this forum because of past problems with chambers on liberty barrels, but in my experience those issues are in the past and the barrels they put out shoot well. Take a look at the Grendel reloading project on MSRhunt.com. There are a lot of Liberty barrels in the spreadsheet with excellent accuracy.
