SHOT Show Fail
#1
This isn't meant to be incendiary, so I hope it isn't taken wrong. I haven't seen anything exciting come out of SHOT so far about the Grendel. In light of the release of the copyright and SAMMI accepting it, I get the feeling that the industry doesn't really care and the Grendel will not take off. I know timing is everything for the success of a product, so was this just really bad timing, or is there really that small of a following for the Grendel?

Bill did not have a booth and did not make an anouncement. I wouldn't expect to see much about it. There is already a base of users in place and it will slowlly grow. That's about all that should be expected.

I wish it was otherwise, but you're right, it was a fail for the grendel. I'm heavily interested in the cartridge, but I'm not really interested in the AR15. I was hoping there would be news about the proposed AK's that are going to be chambered in 6.5 grendel, but nothing. There isn't even a manufacturer offering a bolt action. If there was a decent bolt action chambered in the grendel, I would totally buy it.

I agree with Bob. Don't know how there could be anything exciting. I mean, other than loading different bullets, the cartridge is going to be the same as it has always been. And there's really nothing new about endless variations of the AR15.

Slow, incremental change is all that can be expected.

I'm sure this is heresy on this forum, but here goes: It's just another caliber now. Shocking, I know, but true. I don't foresee manufacturers making the Grendel a central caliber to their platforms. On the brighter side, that gives room for niche vendors like Loki and AA to serve a growing customer base. Everybody wins!

If the Russians make their new AK-12 rifle in 6.5 grendel, I think that will save the cartridge.

I'm a little perplexed? You were expecting Remington or Ruger or just what big company to announce? Ruger has looked at it, as hinted at by David Fortier, but after their debacle with the 6.8 a couple years ago, I suspect that they are very gunshy right now about releasing niche cartridges.

The Grendel is growing, it just won't be a major that jumps on it right away. Considering how slowly the .30 Remington AR has grown, even when backed by a HUGE company, or how slowly their .450 has grown, the Grendel is doing VERY well.

The Grendel is very healthy and growing reasonably all the time. Just look at how many new members join here every week, and how many are new to the cartridge!

AA never has a booth at SHOT, but will at NRA, which is where they typically announce stuff. However, the Grendel is now SAAMI, so the push will come from other places.

If the Russians do come out with a 6.5 Ak expect real growth quickly otherwise as stated here several times it will be a slow (but i think) steady march as more and more people find the benefits to the cartridge ..

Sorry, I don't know the intricate history and politics of it, but from what I have gathered people were saying the AA control over it is what was holding it back, and now that's gone. I'm just surprised that for what the cartridge offers, it isn't more popular. Seems everybody and their dog is coming out with new 6.8's, but nothing I have seen in the Grendel. Just seems like there is an uderlying reason that I'm missing.

It wasn't long ago that a few folks were heralding the end of Grendel and revocation of SAAMI application...

I've been researching barrel makers for a possible Grendel bolt build and/or 260 conversion. I've been amazed at how many barrel makers offer the Grendel already. It is growing...slowly and will continue to do so.

260 Remington was introduced in 1997...it has just recently been gaining in popularity (although a few "in the know" about 6.5mm ballistics have been supporters for some time).

No, I meant the AK-12. The AK-200 is just a prototype.

AR's seem to be making it into the hunting fields more and more. Thus far, I think it's just the tip of the iceberg regarding what the real potential is for the AR-15 hunting market. Thus, I expect that cartridges such as the 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC will continue to grow for many years to come.

It appears that the 6.8 has jumped out to an early lead over the 6.5, but I expect the 6.5 to eventually catch and pass the 6.8. (And I'm not just referring to ballistics. Wink )

Wolf did talk about the steel case ammo coming soon. I think once readily available affordable ammo is here, interest will go up. Although, with the wait times for a good barrel now, I'm not sure I want it to get much more popular.Big Grin

So I stopped by CZ's booth today as planned, and told them the level of interest that I have seen not only in speech, but in deed with those who buy the 527 and rebarrel in Grendel, including my friend. I talked with guys who drive those types of decisions, and what I was told was like a slap in the face.

"We'll probably do a 6.8 before we do a Grendel." Probably the stupidest thing I heard in the whole show so far, considering they already have the bolt face, and the superiority of the Grendel, especially in that action since you no longer are limited by AR15 .223 bolt geometry and lower pressures. A 6.8 in the CZ makes about zero sense.

Proving once again that gun manufacturers don't listen to the market...They run a survey, the survey is dominated by people wanting the Grendel, they don't do it. Then people talk to them that are in the know and they still do something ridiculous!

I'm wondering if we can talk Savage or maybe Mossberg into building one. Mossberg has a cool new action/stock that accepts AR mags, which would be seriously cool!!

Seeing as how Bill just recently released the patent only a few months now. Im not surprised anyone had anything worked up for the Grendel. It doesnt mean they wont. Really in my opinion what will take the Grendel into the future will be more ammo manufacturers. Federal, Remington etc. Anyone on this site knows the Grendel is an excellent cartridge with plenty of killing power and some darn good accuracy. I myself like having a rifle that everyone else doesnt have right now. But im not worried about the future of the Grendel. Ive only recently within the last 2 years got into the Grendel and in that time alot has happened and alot more people i talk to know what the Grendel is now. The Grendel will be fine. Next year at this time i would expect we will have already heard something new and interesting.
