.22 lr upper??

Hi all,

Since I know very little about AR's, and even less about any of the .22 uppers, can someone help with basic information? Who makes the best one, are they hard to convert, or is it "just" changing the upper, any other pertinent info you can share would be appreciated.

For whatever reason people are still hoarding .22. I wouldn't even bother, it's easier for me to get grendel ammo right now.lol

Basically just swap uppers. The best upper I've found is from Carbon Arms. CMMG uppers are well built, too. Carbon Arms, though, has spent a LOT of time developing an upper that is lights out accurate, (think 1-2" groups at 100 yards with bulk ammo!) Very light. 18" barreled upper weighs 3 pounds to 3 pounds 2 ounces.


Nordic also makes a great one.

For about the same price you can get one of those 22 LR uppers, you could also just buy an M&P 15/22 dedicated .22LR. Why settle for 1 1/2 rifles, when you can have 2? They also take any trigger group your standard AR will.

Excellent results with my DPMS dedicated upper. Lots of good reports from Tactical Solutions owners, too. All that's needed besides the complete upper is mags. Black Dog Machine are what I use. http://blackdogmachinellc.net/AR15.22-26-ROUND-MAG.aspx

It really depends upon what you want to do with the upper, just plinking, then the solutions above are good enough. If, you desire really precise feedback, there are a couple of companies that build .22 uppers for the National Match High Power crowd to practice with, Compass Lake Engineering, and White Oak Armament. They both build the uppers based upon the US Army M261 conversion kit but with a dedicated match barrel rather than the chamber insert. These use standard 5.56 AR15/M4 magazines with an insert. I used a Compass Lake Engineering version with a Krieger Match Barrel for several years while working on my Distinguished Rifle Badge and it performed well, one hole groups with Wolf Match Target at 50 yards and 1/2" at 100 yards. These are more expensive and are relatively readily available in 20" A2/A4 service rifle configuration or NRA match rifle configuration, but would need to be special ordered in any form of tactical configuration. http://www.compasslake.com/index.php?mai...gs908fi4r5
.22 LR ammunition is readily available at $0.14 per round and up. Just the promotional (cheap) stuff is unobtainable. I'm currently going though 500-1000 rounds a week training for my Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge from my Marvel 1911.
