In case any one is interested I cast the chamber of my PF chamber and the Stoner chamber . The top one is the Stoner ,hope the picture works. You can see the Stoner free bore is very short if there at all .

I think some of us hesitated in pushing harder for a chamber cast because of the challenges in getting accurate measurements.

The side-by-side pictures say enough.

The chamber looks like it isn't square with the bore, this alone would break bolts.

Any thing that looks bent or crooked is an optical illusion I guess . Actually the Stoner lead looks like most any chamber I have cast that was for cast lead bullets .A nice gradual taper .I have seen some military rifles with very long free bore and Swiss rifles with no free bore or taper at all . If I was designing this chamber, I would make the neck at least .005 smaller in diameter ,the free bore tighter and a little shorter than the lower cast and use the taper of the stoner barrel. Some day I need to cast the chamber in my Model 1 Sales barrel as it is a very good shooter . If weather is good Tuesday I will find out how the Bartlien barrel works

Indeed.....a picture is essential to understanding. We are visual creatures and it is a wonder we learn anything without seeing what is being discussed/described.

Both castings are straight .I guess the shadow or angle makes it look bent .

It seems like this thread has gotten a bit off the original topic.

I asked if anyone had experience with the Crosshill Tech side-charger that OP posted about. Cory suggested looking at Quality Arms and I am glad I did. Jim & Jeremy were very responsive and went above & beyond to make sure I got what I wanted and was happy. The machine work looks good to me and the finish as good as any I have seen. It went together very well with a Shilen barrel and YHM free floated handguard. A Syrac adj gas block finished the package.

Unfortunately, it is build for a friend and I have to send it out tomorrow. It almost looks too good to let go. I did put a few rounds down the pipe just to make sure everything functioned, and it did. Shot pretty straight for me with iron sights and a mil spec trigger.

Glad to hear that they took care of you. I've 2 builds in progress I already have the receivers for. I've been very tempted to sell one set to buy their side charging set for my 20" Grendel.

I have an LAR side charger on my 20" Shilen Grendel and like the principle a lot. My next build well likely be on a Quality Arms upper.

One small thing. They do require that a modified bolt catch be installed on your lower. They provide a bolt catch with the paddle removed. Releasing the bolt is accomplished by pulling back on the charging handle and letting it go. I don't think that is uncommon on that style of side charger, and it is pretty easy to get used to. Nice to know ahead of time.

You will not be disappointed with the Quality Arms billet Side Charged upper.......got my first a few weeks ago and when I compare it to my LAR Ops-4 upper, the QA upper is of supperior quality and fit. The QA upper fits so tight to pretty much any of my billet lowers that I need a punch to pop-out the take down pins.....that is not the case with my LAR Ops-4 that doesn't fit nearly as tight to the same lowers.

If you use an ambi billet lower like a Mega or Seekins, you can use the ambi bolt release on the opposite side to release the bolt, instead of having to pull back on charging handle.

Interesting. I appreciate the feedback. This weekend, I will be posting up a running list (w/ pictures) of all the side charged uppers available on the market.......my list is up to 13 or 14 right now, and I'm sure there are plenty more out there. Fun time to be a consummer........lots of great new products coming out daily.
