Anyone hear of Grendel II using a 6.5x47 Laupa throat?

I think he meant -.001" as we went through the math exercise earlier in one of the threads (not sure if it was this one) and determined being .001" under minimum chamber would result in short throat.

Maybe thats what happened with the reamer manufacture, went the wrong way....? Guess Satern needs and is responsible to check what there manufactures send them like the bolts that were .130 HS and 2.80 OAL. Also the reamer might have been out of spec. I guess ultimately it is the Manufacture's responsibility to check products they receive and resell, it seems as if they failed a few times lately and it is biting them in the ass.

This is the 6.5 grendel reamer from PTG.

In the drawing you can see that the part that is .2644 should be .153 long.
If factory ammo is making a ring .050 thou from the neck then that part isn't .2644.
If the reamer is minus 1 thou then that part is .2634 and if the groove isn't .264 it could hold the bullet, especially if not perfectly centered and any roughness from the reamer getting dull.
A reamer designed to cut that part of the throat to .2644 and nothing else should make the barrels right.
There would be not much cutting involved and the chamber remains 6.5 Grendel spec.
There shouldn't be any marks on a factory bullet after it drops from the chamber.
It took a tremendous amount of polishing with JB's on my barrel to work OK and I still see slight scuffing on the bullet when it falls loading to factory spec.
If my barrel was any worse than it was I would send it in.
There should not be a minus 1 thou on the reamer spec that would be less than .2644 in that part of the chamber.

Dah, isn't that a bit unethical?

That is the message I got from Lindsey at Satern. The next NEW batch of bolts next week will be thoroughly inspected, and one sent out to replace my short bolt. Wouldn't that be SOP?

In reading this and others this is why I was or felt lucky with my first build and part of another and then ordered a complete rifle this last time. You guys that build these I hold you in high standards and like what you do but my luck (if you can call it that) does not seem to be that good. BANG BANG!!

A reamer that is +.001" too large in diameter can jack things up pretty quickly, as in tight chambers and short throats.

Run that reamer like a bad boy until it gets smaller from wear and see what happens.

Thanks for that. I assume you meant -.001 too small. I always figured there would be that much variation in manufacturing and didn't think that would be enough to cause problems BUT I am extremely new to the Grendel and compound chamber stuff.
I would think the problem would be from the latter more so though, Using tooling long past it's effective life span especially after hearing about visible chatter marks.

Maybe that is what the reamer manufacture did in his math equation, went the wrong way....

You're absolutely right. I guess that's what happens when I post at 12:20 a.m.

-.001" reamer allowance means smaller chamber than SAAMI allows, since SAAMI only allows .002" on their chamber drawing.

Thanks. I thought that maybe I was missing a key concept.

My PTG Go/No Go gauges for the 6.5 Grendel have a difference of approx. 0.0005" using the Hornady analog calipers. Maybe I need to spring for the Starret calipers.

No small irony there. That is exactly what he was accusing bwaites and other mods here, of doing. Sounds like a classic case of transference. At the time, I suspected he protested a bit too much!

Me too. I got all of one post in. That has to be a internet forum record.
