My first 6.5mm Grendel Project - after 3 .223 Rem AR-15s

The ERA TAC mount you see on my pics is designed especially for the S&B 5-20x50, illuminated, Ultra Short.

The ERA TAC model no. is of the mount is: T1001-267A,
I combined it with the ERA TAC bubble level attachment and the ACI from snipertools.

It was my plan to build up an AR-15 which only includes absolute top notch parts. It took almost two years to reach "assembly readyness level"

We (my gunsmith and me) were on the range Saturday 8th of February, we fired a few rounds and checked the proper working of the rifle (I made a movie which will be available on YOUTUBE soon). We found out the following:

1. A gas port diameter of 2.5 mm results in a repeating process at the lower area of operation but without malfunction. The recoil is very low and the cases only hop out of the chamber (45° behind, app. 30 -50 cm away) with a Noveske Switchblock 20" rifle at "normal" position.

2. Attaching the B&T silencer and turning the Switchblock to "Silencer" mode resulted in an ejection of the used case but the bolt did not travel far enough backwards to feed the subsequent round.

3. Considering the results of 1. & 2., we will open up the gas port diameter to 2.6mm in order to achieve an sufficient gas pressure in "Normal" and "Silencer" Mode of the Noveske switch block - this should ensure margin against lower loads (the tests were perfomed with 27grs. N140, 57mm O.A.L, 123grs. Sierra Matchking)

4. I knew it in advance but the PRI stuff lacks a little bit of precision:

4.1 The Delta Handguard should contain slotted holes on the 12 o´clock position where the SPR Rail is attached. After assembly of the upper reciever we found out that the through-holes that should fit to the rail of the upper receiver didn´t fit. Slotted holes would enable to adjust the position of the SPR Rail with respect to the upper receiver.

4.2 The PRI iron sight set I ordered is practically incompatible with the SPR Rail. The rear sight is mounted on upper receiver level, the frontsight is mounted to SPR Rail level, this results in a cant which can not be compensated in any way except of a front sight modification - this is a part which really sucks because I knew it in advance and PRI didn´t make any move to solve that problem. It could be possible to switch to a TROY combination of a regular rear sight and a micro frontsight, unfortunately this package is not available. I think I have to disassemble the frontsight and shorten it (if possible). Otherwise I would have to give it without frontsight to the magazine review.

5. The best news is: The 6.5 Grendel got C.I.P listed in May 2013!! LINK to CIP Website

And Hornady had their 123 grs. A-Max ammunition for a C.I.P. listing test in Mellrichstadt - Germany a few weeks ago. That ammo is CIP listed now and can be purchased at every shop which sells Hornady Ammo.

due to deadly dullness while I am waiting for my Schmidt and Bender Scope, I spent some time ordering really nice equipment from TAB Gear. A custom made SAS-R cover for the B&T moderator as well as a bean bag for the stock (I am a bipod shooter).

Last year, when I decided to buy the scope, I talked to an Recknagel /ERA TAC engineer about an offset mount for the illuminated Schmidt & Bender Ultra Short which accommodates the usage on all AR-15 upper receivers. The mount has to be special because of the short tubes in front and back of the elevation adjustment turret. The engineer said that it could take some days...I almost forgot that but not the Recknagel guy. I received that new offset mount today!

I will switch the T1001-267A block mount to the offset mount T1001-298A.

Yes, you're right! But it rocks!

The material between the scope rings and the scope is from a latex glove, I use to cut two fingers off one of these unpowdered protection glowes and swipe them over the objective and ocular lens to prevent direct contact between rings and scope.

Benefit: The scope can be dismounted without any marks of installation, furthermore it behaives like glue. I cut the overlap with a razor blade.

That scope cost more than the three cars I had in the 80's combined. While one of those cars was from the height of the 8-track era, it only had a Philco AM radio. lol

I have been on the range today and tried the following loads with similar results on paper:

Load 1 - 25 rounds, 5 rounds each group
Hornady Case
CCI 450 Primer
27.0 grs VV N140
123 grs. Lapua GB489 Bullet
O.A.L. 57.0 mm / 2.244"

Load 2 - 25 rounds, 5 rounds each group
Hornady Case
CCI 450 Primer
27.5 grs IMR 4895
123 grs. Sierra Match King #1727
O.A.L. 57.0 mm / 2.244"

Load 3 - 15 rounds, 5 rounds each group
Hornady Factory 123 grs. Ballistic Tip

I cleaned the barrel after the first 25 rounds on the range. I am keeping a logbook for that rifle which shows that I shot 83 rounds cumultative. All 5 Shot groups were about 30 to 50 mm (1.18" to 1.96") wide. They were getting tighter after cleaning.

Is there a recommended precision load for the 6.5 Grendel you would suggest me to try out? Shall I change to lighter bullets? What load has proven ultra accurate?
Or shall I wait until the barrels running in process is completed (after about 200 rounds)?

Please remember, the barrel has a twist of 1/8 an is 20" long.

Please let me know your precision load data.
