6.5 Grendel PTG Reamer
#21
Dammitman Saturn tests all chambers with go/nogo gages. I would think it is not a bolt problem. Do you have a sized case?

My go no go gauges also work fine in this barrel. All i am saying is with any of my LBC bolts i can lock a factory round and although it sticks i can remove it. With the bolt from saturn you must tap it out, its stuck real good. I need to try an empty new brass to see how it does.

HOLD ON!!! i take ot back. My go gauge will NOT go with the bolt from saturn but will with the LBC bolt. I am going to send bac to Iowa.

Whatever reamer they used, the chambers turned out beautifully. My 2.275" COL 123gr A-MAX drops in and out of them (I've tried it in over a dozen barrels so far.) like butter, and the 123gr SST factory load doesn't jam into the lands either, just taps right out.

The chambers are free from tool marks, and are the best chambers I think I've seen. When I look through the bores, it's like shining a Surefire into your eye, really.

I don't think I have ever heard of someone enjoy being blinded so much before.

Do you have a bore scope?
If you do you can look at the location of the land free area in the throat. If the reamer cut the throat too small the lands will start at the end of the 45 degree cone where the case stops. If the throat is cut correctly the lands should start .034" in front of the 45 degree cone. Apx twice as long as the cone.

Tedward, the link you posted is not for the SAAMI 6.5 Grendel, it's for a "6 Grendel".

The SAAMI Grendel chamber is very forgiving for ogive shape and seating depth, even to the point of being labeled a sloppy chamber by many critics. If the reamers are cut with an allowable -.001", that will create tight chambers with a pronounced short throat, exactly as some are seeing on their barrels.

Just in the neck alone, there is .010" - .015" room, since the chamber length to the neck mouth is 1.530", while most brass is 1.515"-1.520". Factory ammo should not be jamming into the lands, but if a .001" tighter reamer was used, this is a very real possibility.

can -.001 on the reamer make a throat .050" short?

with the shallow angle, -.001 could make a difference.

The reamer may be correct, but the barrels may be machined too economically.
I wonder about the liberty barrel making process. Do they drill, ream, then button the bore? Do they skip the reaming process? Do they machine too quickly to get a good surface finish? Are the barrels not centered on the lathe well? Does the chamber reamer chatter? Do they rough ream, and then finish ream the chamber, or just ream the chamber in one step?

All of those questions could answer why an in spec reamer would not create an in spec part.

Depending on the angle of the throat, there is the potential. Need to know what angle the throat is cut at relative to the bore.

12 were checked with my Manson go/no-go gauge I just got from Brownells. Some from earlier orders and some from a current. Also the Brownells barrel, got 1 to check quality, and my AR740 Lilja.

Getting a little heated in here and my info is not going to do anything for anyone reading this. I'm going to start a new thread and slowly back away.

well, after a call today to saturn and a short conversation, i have determined this. yes they do test all chambers with a go no go set of gauges but its one master bolt they use. then i have to figure they get another bolt from boxful of them and ship it. my bolt is not going to work. also, they have a new reamer coming shortly to take a little more out of these barrels that seem to have a somewhat short throat if the owner wants. i personally am going to send mine in to have the work done. i am hoping and can only hope is for it to just get enough taken out to make sure that a good normal bolt will chamber a factory hornady round without touching the rifling. jsut factory rounds. i dont need it bored out deeper. i figure this will either come out right and a good shooter or not. i really dont need a budget barrel thats a sub par shooter, this caliber just costs too much to shoot for that. its gonna be a learning thing for me. i really dont see myself ever buying a "lesser" barrel again. you really do get what you pay for it seems.

How does that Satern Spartan chamber compare?

Heard Satern is working with PTG to get a reamer to lengthen the throats. Hope they are going to make this right.

I think the first thing on your comment needs to be accurate, the bullet was not hitting the lands but touching the free-bore or there lack of.
I talked to Steve a week ago about this and he said the same thing, he was going to do what people ask for and make free-bore for heavier bullets. Not sure if it will accommodate the 123gr to 129 or 140 but we'll see. PTG is currently making the reamer, its in process. I will not have them deviate from the original since I do not know if the material being removed will open it up and once the barrel is heated up, will it become less accurate? That is an unknown to me. I know Steve would not do what he is doing if he felt there was a compromise but I'm satisfied with the way it is.

Your barrel will be in good hands and I think this entire issue got out of hand but now the Grendel II will handle heavier bullets from the get go and make everyone happy.

I think that is his intentions, customer satisfaction.

If I mis-worded anything please correct me, I'm not trying to give false information, just as I understand it. meaning the freebore and lands comment.

What the hell are you talking about regarding a "Grendel II"?...that is total BS.

The SAAMI spec chamber handles 123 SST/A-Max just fine. Everyone else's (with the sole exception of Shivesy's McGowen barrel which was reamed with another PTG reamer) has been fine.

I'm still bothered by the attributed comment from S. Satern saying the throat is NOT part of the SAAMI spec. If he really believes that, then his comments regarding his PTG reamer being in spec is very suspect.

It also goes back to SAAMI specifies the MINIMUM chamber, and MAXIMUM cartridge. The reamer maker must make the reamer such that the resulting chamber is in spec. I don't think there is a spec, per se, for the reamer.

Thank God that Bill A. maintained such tight control of the pre-SAAMI chamber!...now we see why!

+1000!

You beat me to it, Bjornf16.

"Grendel II" is one of the most presumptuous things I've heard said on this board, in quite a while. That is something you would expect to hear from someone trying to redefine the terms of an argument.

Quote:I think the first thing on your comment needs to be accurate, the bullet was not hitting the lands but touching the free-bore or there lack of.
If the bullet is "not hitting the lands but touching the free-bore or there lack of", then THAT, by its very definition, is HITTING THE LANDS. A bullet cannot "hit the free bore." Another case of trying to redefine the terms. If there is no free bore, then the chamber, by definition, is short throated.

Again, maybe I mis-worded this. If the reamer is in spec, and the bullet is hitting the free bore or lands, then removing more material or opening it up to eliminate the touch or kiss as being said, that is changing the SAAMI spec. Right? I'm asking not telling.

If the issue is occurring and it needs to be made bigger for those with the issue, then what do you call it?
