Went to a friends to do some shooting for load development. This was the second trip w/ the new lilja 204. My results were so sub standard. It's has already had a good # of rounds down the pipe. For break in purposes and development. Started off w/ factory hornady 32gr v-max. Box says 4225 fps, not even close :bash:. Magnetospeed read 3500 and change. Could barely cover groups w/ a xlg pizza pan. lol It was bad. So I switched to my hornady hand loads. Better but anything was better than where it was at. Speeds just were'nt there. From my data I should be pushing 38 -3900 fps w/ cfe 223 not even close. Useing the hodgdon web site. Today I got my hands on a 9th addition hornady manual. I'm almost one full grain low with their data :yike:. So many what the hells have been answerd today you wouldn't beleive it. Now I'm excited to start with a fresh slate and see where this takes me. Beleive me I'm not kidding when I said pizza pan :chuckle:

For starters I would slug the bore to determine bore size, with your low velocities you mar not be getting a tight seal which would also account for your terrible accuracy, another accuracy killer could be your crown

lilja 17 inch. I new I would lose sum fps with that barrel length just not that much.

Barrel length may account for the low velocity 204 is a bit over bored and listed velocity a are obtained with 24 inch barrels, but your pizza pan accuracy, cheek your crown for a nick or something

What kind of upper is it installed in, and is the upper receiver face square and true to the bore?

Then there are the simple fixes: is your scope on tightly, is your barrel torqued properly, what sort of rest, what range

17" lilja barrel 1-12 custom
Nikon 3x9x40 bushmaster w/ M223 scope mount. I rechecked and all was nicely snug.
areo upper 60lb torque
MI free float SS rifle length
There is no movement or slop between upper an lower
RCBS 204 dies.
Solid bench and bags were used (very comfy) lol
My plan is to resize full length. Bump the powder charge up to hornady 9th addition recommendation. Which I was almost a full grain low. Recheck chamber length and load accordingly.

Pull the barrel and check that your receiver face is true. If not, lap it and lap your bolt to the lugs.

60lb torque? I have no experience or knowledge of the 204 but that seems a little much.

Still within spec for the AR15…. "Barrel Nut - 30 Ft. lbs. Minimum, not to exceed 80 Ft. Lbs. to align the next slot in the barrel nut."
Nearly all of my 20 calibers are setup with chambers that have 0 or no more than .020 freebore. The 204 Ruger standard chambering is famous for excessive freebore. The 204 can be real picky about bullet jump. In an AR you are limited by the dreaded mag length, which would increase bullet jump even more. I would seat the bullets at the maximum length that will feed from the mag.
For 2014 I'm going to build another side charging 20 cal AR upper for live varmints, most likely in 20 Beggs (powder capacity of a .100 short 20 PPC), which I hoping will feed from a 7.62x39, 6.8 or Grendel mag.
