antelope hunting with the 6.5 G

I got a nice buck Speed goat and 2 Does with 123 grain amax 319 yards


my partner got a nice Speed goat also using the 6.5 G with 123 SST

Also, is that one of your hand loads, or a factory 123gr SST from Hornady?

both bucks Heart shots, factory Amax, SST's were hand-loads will get his velocity later, amax was through the rib and no exit, SST exited, does were spine shot and heart, spine shot did not exit it exploded once out of the spine (Amax)

My question, the assumption is the SST is going to be a better hunting bullet compared to the AMAX. You've seen both preform on the same hunt, would you agree?

yes more penetration on the SST still with good expansion. Amax kills good but pretty much blew up inside, the photo above show the Amax shattered after cutting the spine but it never left the animal

The "loper" I've had from WY were tasty (even my daughter liked those loper steaks)…I think it just depends on their diet. They can be tasty…or not.

I have always found antelope to be the most enjoyable game animal to hunt. It has been my experience to shoot them before they run hard and to skin them after the kill that can make a difference in taste. Great story and pictures, thanks for sharing.

A Buddy of mine shot a buck Antelope with his 24" AA 6.5 Grendel at 400 yards last month in Wyoming. He used a 120 Nosler Balistic a Tip with A2520 powder.

When I went out this past weekend to one of my shooting spots, there was a large herd of antelope, as there usually is out there. They like to keep their distance, and we lazed them at 419yds running away from us.

I'll have to get tags for that some day.

I couldn't tell you how goat taste or some other things that come to mind LOL, but if you shoot an antelope after it runs hard and don't skin it quickly it will have a very gamey taste to it that is only good in chili. Antelope have their own taste that I really cant compare anything to it but I do enjoy it if prepared right. Venison has a completely different taste to it in my opinion. Deer and Elk are very close in taste with Elk being my favorite. Failing to skin an antelope after harvesting it in a proper manor can have the same undesirable gamey taste difference as compared to a mule deer buck in the rut and a whitetail doe. I grew up eating Elk and deer and I will take a good size doe or cow elk anytime over a bull elk or buck. Bulls and bucks can be good eating but the cows and does always taste the best. How a person butchers and prepares meat can make all the difference in taste. I have eaten venison by people who obviously didn't know what they were doing and It tasted terrible. Ruffed grouse is about as good as it gets for flavor but when I was newly married my wife boiled a bunch of them and literally sucked the flavor out of them , ending up with a flavor of wet news paper. I didn't think it possible but she made ruffed grouse taste terrible. The butcher and chef can make all the difference.

Antelope are the only game animal I have hunted for pleasure rather than meat. If you hunt antelope that have been shot at you will have a great time trying to out wit them during the stock. I have to laugh , when I was a kid we would hunt them with 22lr rifles. We would put a long piece of flagging on a bush and go hide. The antelope would see the flagging whipping in the wind from a distance and slowly come over to investigate. We would then get an easy head shot.
