Grendel Bolt Action Advice
#1
I am hoping to build a lightweight Grendel bolt action for carry hunting. I would like for the gun to be as light as possible, but still accurate. I have read about some problems with the Savage Actions as far as being a reliable repeater. I am definitely wanting a repeater and not single shot. So, what action would you build from, or have you built from and had success. I was thinking about either the Mini Mauser actions or the CZ 527 actions for lightweight. I don't really like the mag on the CZ, but it may be the best route to go. Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated. Or if anyone has a Grendel bolt action that they would part with, I would be interested as well.

Thanks
Brad

Brad,

There was an entire section dedicated to this on the forum before it was maliciously attacked. I vaguely remember a lot of information on there about at least one or two forum members who were building using the CZ actions, and another small action from someone. I think they might have gotten to actually shooting just before the site went down. I don't know what happened to those guys. It would make a great little handy rifle for hunting, that's for sure. Should be able to squeeze more velocity out of it too.

That is what I was thinking. Hopefully some of those guys will chime in and give their reviews/opinions.

Brad,

The CZ 527 is certainly the easiest way to go, simply a rebarrel. Lothar Walther makes the barrels and if you do a google search for "cz 527 stocks" you'll get several options for wood laminate and composite stocks. I plan on building one for my wife when I finish the two AR's I'm working on now.

I was reading the other day a article that a guy built one on a cz action and lothar walther stocks the barrel for this build. It's a direct replacement barrel for there 7.62x39 bolt action

I see where Lothar Walther makes a prefit barrel for the CZ. I am still waiting to see if anyone else has built one from something else that maybe I am forgetting about.

Here's a thread about a Grendel-chambered barrel for the Savage action:

Here's another thread about different chambers. It lists a few barrel sources.

CSS offers prefit 6.5 barrels for the CZ 527:

Pac-nor offers a "pre-fit" barrel for the 527 chambered in "6.5 GREN MATCH". I used quotes around "pre-fit" because it is a custom barrel, but they have already have the right profile, etc.

CSS has the Lothar Walther "6.5 CSS" barrel, but it is a drop-in for the 527 CARBINE. I'm building a 527 VARMINT (heavier profile) rig.

SAOD Industries offers both the ".264 LBC" and "6.5 SAOD" in a varmint profile, pre-fit 527 barrels (both Lothar Walther).

Thanks for the replies guys. Atleast now I have some options to choose from. I have had good luck with Lothar Walther barrels in the past. Does anyone know what brand barrel SAOD uses? Also, with the prefits, does it still require gunsmith installation with use of a lathe? I have dealt with the Savage swithbarrels in the past, but with no barrel nut, was wondering how this would work.

Thanks

The Savage is not difficult at all, it simply requires a PPC bolt face available on their new 7.62x39 scout rifle, ot opening up and squaring a .223 bolt face. The Mini Mauser in 7.62x39 is also a gem of a rifle, although the prices and availability are a little tough sometimes. I will have pics on my website of both Savage and a 799, I will let you know when they are up. Savage feed lip manipulation is generally required but not in any great amount, it just takes a little patience. The 527 is a relative breeze, and a Remington 700/model 7 is also not a great deal of problem.
Use your imagination and make decsions based on what you want. The Grendel makes a great little bolt rifle!

Thanks guys. I would think that it may be hard to get the Remington to feed properly as I am definitely wanting a repeater and not a single shot.

TritonArms,
If one was able to get one of the newer centerfeed Savages in 7.62x39, they should be able to simply switch barrels shouldn't they, as the bolt head and detachable mag should work? Also, do you guys rebarrel the Mini Mauser 799's as well? Do you have a source to get these guns?

Thanks

yes the savage bolt and mag. will work just swap barrels. the cz web site has a place to find a dealer and soad or lothar walther can ship the barrel to you or your gunsmith/gunshop if need be

Tritonarms is right! The Grendel is pretty easy to set up if you are careful! The CZ is about the lightest and handiest though. I have three with different barrel lengths and weights. All shoot under 1/2" with the right ammo. And are a breeze to carry around. Put a scout scope on it and you are good to go.

It will shoot farther with great accuracy but its still a mid size cartridge. Limit your shots to 250 on deer and you will be in great shape.

If you are on to Coyotes you can reach out a bit further but remember the energy limitations.

It's been my experience with the 527 actions that you need to spend hours lapping the bolt and ways to get a very smooth action. While it may seem economical at first, I've never had to do that with a 700 action. The set trigger in the 527 may seem attractive too, but you can't "unset" it without either shooting or unloading and dry firing, and I would rather have a nice crisp 2.5 pound remington or Timney or other trigger than one with two settings.

just my opinion.

Just raise the bolt and touch the trigger and the trigger unsets itself. Lower the bolt back down and you are good to go. No need to unload just unlock.

Anybody have a lightweight bolt action Grendel they want to sell?

Thanks I didn't know that. I would still be worried about it with my CZ 500 Jeffery. I'm not sure why that gun has a set trigger, other than they all do.

I've had a Grendel made up for me from a cz 527 (only complaint is that the safty is backward) ; a grendel also made up on a Mini mauser acton. (only complaint is the stock and action seem "chunky" ; and a grendel that started life as a .223 remington 700. The best of the lot. done up by Wyats custon and PT&.G. With a 700 as a starter action, you can get a huge number of stock, bolt, trigger and safty changes over time. Flute the barrel flute the bolt put a set trigger on it along with a winchester saftey and a sako extractor put the whole thing in a kevlar stock and take it to hunting camp. let your friends try and figgure out what your hunting with.
