Bolt Group Buy - Possible?
Tedward Wrote:Xcounty, I know you started this with Maxim and posted the price and all but he doesn't want any money up front and price is not set. Cost is still up in the air but as I just posted, we might have everyone just deal directly with him. TBD

I'm not trying to hijack your find/post but I have also used him in the past but this never materialized. I have sent him my AA Bolt and been in touch with him when he has new updates. If you want to be the POC feel free but I will post as I speak to him also.

Price is still not set but he will not gouge us, he's a great source of a great product so he might pop in the forum once he has time.

Thanks all...

When he gave me the quote it probably was on the assumption he was going to use the Carpenter 158 steel. As i posted some time back we are all going to post our own orders through Frank. No need for a list or anything. I still intend to call him at least once a week. Just post up info when you get it i don't get the impression that Frank does not like to talk Wink

So Xcountry and Tedward will be the conduit for the information flow to and from Maxim about the bolt issue, right? You two will continue to post updates and notifications when it is ok to submit an order to Maxim. If by chance, there are questions about the bolt then it is ok to ask you via the forum or by PM for answers or guidance. That should minimize the redundancy to Frank. Sound like I got it right?

I don't intend to get into a silly pissing contest who the one conduit and who calls Frank. I posted Franks info on here because Frank and I decided we didn't need one conduit. He said go ahead and post up his info so people could contact him. That said no reason to abuse that and bug him. He's decided to make the bolts and we know they are going to be based on the AA bolts and made of 9130 steel. So really no reason for me to bug him more than once a week to get a update on time lines. I know the price i know it will be pretty reasonable and they will be good quality. He quoted 65 buck before but needing new materials could change that but whatever the price it will be reasonable. I know this because when people were price gouging on bolts in Feb, March and April he decided to sell directly to the public at normal retail so we could build rifles and not get ripped off. That alone tells me what i need to know. If Frank tells me he only wants to talk to one person i'm cool with that as well.

Xcountry and Tedward, thank you both for your work on this so far! I agree with Sputnik and I believe that there is no reason for everyone else to be calling Frank once a week. I know first hand that when you send parts to outside agencies for heat treating or anything else you are at their production mercy, no matter how strong your relationship with them. Do I understand correctly that the bolts we will be buying from Frank will be just the bolt body and the extractor, minus all other parts required for a "complete bolt"? Does anyone know what configuration Frank makes his Bolt Carriers to?

For now I suggest that we all wait a few weeks and see what develops giving Frank the time to concentrate on getting production up and running.

Thanks man! I didn't mean to upset anyone it assigning tasks or to get in anyone's sandbox. It was a friendly suggestion to insure Frank isn't bothered by too many inquiries and that information flows up and down the pipe. I think a once a week update will provide great feedback. I don't think this will have nearly the issues the group barrel buy has with contours, Gas blocks, etc. That said, I am not quite sure what additional parts I need to look for to put the Maxim bolt into a carrier to make a complete BCG. Are there extractor springs, extractor pins, ejection pins, ejection springs....I am too new at this to be informed. Anyway, sorry if I annoyed anyone.

He's going to have a complete bolt ready to go in a carrier or maybe a complete BCG. I'll check with him but that was one thing he had mentioned because his friend had 14,000 gas keys so I think he was getting the supplies for the option of a complete Bolt Carrier as a option to the full Bolt assembly.

Heading to a Gun Show and will let you know for sure when he responds about the COMPLETE BOLT, extractor, springs and everything.

Xcountry, If you hear something post it, if I do i will too...Also agree with what ever he passes on will be posted. I think also like you said he will let everyone buy directly from him so we don't have a money issue of a middle man taking the money like we have with the barrel buy.

keep us updated if you hear something too.

and thanks

Starting production Monday he said. So process has begun.. time is unknown but I will post when I hear something. He did say he was going to do some testing, maybe fire a few rounds then check for stress cracks or what ever they look for.... not positive but got that impression.

Did he say what method they used for testing for stress cracks?

I didn't ask. Maybe some kind of x-raying or something. I didn't ask because that is what he does for a living and I think he knows what to do. If you want me to ask next time he calls I can so you know.

Do you know what he should be doing or just wondering?

A lot of stress cracks can be seen by flourescent contrast imaging...

I know what methods they have to use for space hardware. I wouldn't expect that from Frank. You're right though for this type of development it should be at a minimum an x ray type method. At least for the first run.

Franks bolts are in one of the larger commercial produced AR-15 rifles that are known for good quality at a good price. Frank knows what he's doing.

X-ray is expensive and maybe a bit overshot due to the fact that a bolt is not a "safe life" item. A dye penetration test level 2 or 3 is fully sufficient.

As I said and Xcountry, Franks got it under control. I spoke to him today and it is a pressure test. All of our answers are wrong. baaaa.

He doesn't want to elaborate and say something wrong or me translate what he said wrong, so the exact information will be posted soon. by another forum member who has the knowledge to explain correctly. Either way, no worries.

I am soooooook tired of Alexander Arms and their impossibly long order fulfillment times.
Bill is a designer and needs to recognize that he needs to hire some business types to get ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF HIS BUSINESS IN ORDER.
He is singlehandedly murdering his own creation. And out of ego and pride is the worst thing.
Bill.......you are a great ordnance and cartridge DESIGNER. For the sake of all things Grendel.....let someone who can actually run a BUSINESS do so for Alexander Arms.
I am loskng faith sir.....
I love my rifle...but it is getting hard to maintain a relationship with it because it wont "bang me." Because parts and ammo are non-exostent

6-8 months for a piece of aluminium? Grendels are simply not demanded anywhere near the scalebof 5.56 AR parts.
Del-ton can fulfill an order way quicker than that.
I dont get the e-mails that say their staff continue to "show up early and stay late" to fulfill orders and ship when in the same e-mail they say they have no inventory. What are you shipping? And to whom? Nobody on the forum DEDICATED to you or your creation.

O.K. DONE VENTING. I love you Bill. Please ship my bullets this year. Hornady must not need the $$$$$

Why are you waiting on ammo from Alexander arms when so many others have had them and continue to have them in stock? Ammo has been in stock for weeks. AA is not the place to get ammo.

You got it right on the second line sort of. A Developer actually. And you think he only works for the public? He is on a Military Base. They get there orders and then us sort of like your money, tax first, and the rest is yours. Apparently there is something going on and I don't think he can say anything because there is no reason as you are stating. The next Big Military Show might just be carrying Grendels, who knows.
