My first Grendel / AR Stoner barrel / range result

This is my first scratch AR build and first Grendel.





Specs:
Bushmaster lower receiver (made in Windham)
Windham Weaponry (Original Bushmaster) LPK
Geissele SSA-E trigger
A2 buttstock
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul BAD lever
Magpul trigger guard
BCM extra long extension (Mod 3 I think) charging handle
VLTOR MUR A-1 upper receiver (forward assist version)
Windham Weaponry carrier (M16), cam pin, firing pin, fp retaining pin, etc.
AR Stoner 18" barrel / supplied bolt (nut torqued to about 38 FT-LBS)
VLTOR 0.750 clamp on style gas block
Diamondhead USA VRS "T" 13.5" rail
ARCHON custom "linear compensator"
Scope, for now, Leupold Mark AR (new version) 6-18 x 40
Larue 5/8" quick detach riser with Blackhawk rings

Range Report:
I did some general function test shooting, and everything seemed fine. No apparent feeding / firing issues with around 60 rounds fired (all factory loads, Hornandy AMAX and SST.

I did not have the best setup for accuracy testing today, but I did shoot a couple of 3 shot groups off of a bipod with a rear bag (prone). Both groups measured about 13/16" edge to edge (at 100 yards) or about 0.8 MOA. I think I can do better on a bench with bags. I am encouraged at its accuracy potential.

Your right on that one and it will give you more ammo possibilities.

Nice looking rifle and it shoots, how great is that? Reloading is a great option not only to save some bucks but the possibilities are endless. Take a look at all the bullets available for the Grendel. This summer I've been playing with four different bullets and three different powders. Out the 65 plus groups I've shot so far I've developed two loads, one for the Hornady 129 SST and one for the Nosler 120 BT. Still working on the 123 SST.

Cool blaster. How does the linear compensator work? Any noticeable reduction in muzzle climb or recoil, or have you only fired with it on?

The Grendel is fun to shoot and re-load for. The most important thing you will need when reloading is a competent, experienced mentor.

I have only fired the Grendel round in this gun with the comp on it. The gun seems to have VERY little recoil. I really don't have a way to compare. I kind of doubt there would be a reduction in muzzle rise... just a guess...since there is no upward direction of muzzle gas by the comp. I'm guessing there is probably a reduction in recoil (or perceived recoil), likely very slight, because of the small expansion chamber within the comp. Most importantly, I like how it looks ;-) . I know looks are subjective, but I was pleased with the look of the setup, but I would have been really disappointed if the accuracy was lousy. Of course I have no conclusive data to support sub moa "accuracy", but it's looking promising to me. That makes me the most happy. Thanks for the compliments!

Love the feel of that hand-guard, I have the same thing on my Beowulf. Plan to use it on my 16" Grendel I'm getting together. Going with the Mega Arms SBU with NO Side Charge Handle. Awesome uppers, they actually need heated up to get the barrels on, expands the opening then shrinks back onto the barrel extension. Suppose to help with the harmonics. not sure if it will matter on a 16" barrel but they say it does matter on linger ones. Haven't seen many of the Mega SBU's on this forum though, it is what AA designed with Mega for there Sniper Rifle and side charger.

I like the look of the handguard, but you're right, the feel of it is the real deal maker.

If its a 16" Barrel, this is what I use on 16" Beowulfs. This is the cheapest place around too. http://www.usgunsource.com/grips-pads-st...ating.html

And my wife likes the smooth feel too, and her fingers and mine, fit those groves great along with the shape is more like your hand rather than round. +1 for Diamondhead on this hand-guard.

For a mass unload, it is close to the barrel and a little heat is felt. Also a sweet barrel nut, just a regular wrench and nothing to line up, just tighten and bolt the hand-guard on.

Sounds fair... I feed mine out behind my house and they love the sweet corn. They made it illegal in VA even to feed them. They say there are too many but limit the rules so much they starve in the winter. So I feed them just to watch. Not a bow hunter and not in the yard for sure.

Very nice groups too....and what did you do, bead blast the barrel?

I actually bought it from guy who had fired 30 or so (I got the spent brass and remaining unfired ammo in the deal) rounds of gmax through it in an effort to build an Adams Arms piston gun. He had bead blasted it...which saved me some trouble. I think he abandoned Grendel altogether as I also got four mags in the deal.

Bet he wished he had that back, Piston issues according to my gunsmith.

Yup, the barrel is great, I think thats in line for mine to take down the glare. Mine is shinny SS.

That's why I bought it. I was betting on the piston system being the problem. Everything I have read indicates piston guns, in general, are likely to suffer a decrease in accuracy due to the additional mechanical disturbance, although there are certainly some exceptions. Sub-moa at 300 yards would be great. I hope it happens. Might be too much to wish for.

The piston is good for short barrel lead slingers. The department he works with bought them in Rifle length and he had to remove all of them and go to DI because of the lack of reliability. All the short lengths worked fine but the gas needed seemed to be an issue.

Anyhow, nice gun. also you have listed as NE N.C., up near the tide water???I'm in VA and go down to the beach and Nags Head so just wondering....

Yeah, I'm only about an hour and a quarter to a half from that area (Tidewater). I have spent a lot of time in Nags Head myself!
