If I understand you correctly, to "re-boot" the economy would mean waiting until it collapsed, then somehow eliminate many current government programs, and then somehow revert the economy to a state that existed at some undefined point in the past.
Is that an accurate summation?
Near as I can tell. Everybody probably has their own slightly different scenario in mind. We mostly mean that what is happening simply can't continue in any kind of recognizable format, and we have nothing to fall back on but our asses.

Darwin Fire
Does everybody remember how forest fires used to be regarded as very bad, and to be stopped at all costs? And how they suppressed wild fires in Yosemite? They kept the fires out and allowed the fuel to build up until things got so bad that there was a massive fire they couldn't hope to control.
We've been insulating people from the consequences of their actions for so long that the Darwin fuel built up in this country will all go up some day in the most massive conflagration ever seen in our time. It'll be tragic, yet freeing and somewhat exhilarating at the same time.

stanc,
Sorry, I've been really busy in the last 30 hours since I posted that.
I generally prefer to let people find their own conclusion, while pointing them at stuff that led me to mine.
Yes, Variable has it right. We can't fix this without shutting down the current system and restarting with less crap in the system. We simply can't carry the current burden of entitlements and freeloaders.
Some folks are going to have 2 options, start working or starve, and most of us aren't going to have much else to say about it. Able bodied people simply can't be carried. We have and will always have the ability to care for the truly incapable, but we've created 3 generations of people who think their food comes from the government, and make no attempt to better themselves, or even to TRY to feed themselves. That creates a situation where those actually entitled to benefits will see them go away as the government tries to stretch more and more from less and less.
(VA benefits are already stretched to the max. In New York and some areas of New England a disabled veteran from the current conflict will wait over 600 days, on average, before he gets benefits. Some areas are better, but the nationwide average is over 300 days.) Those benefits aren't available because so much money is funneled to people who don't deserve the services, but the politicians have decided to give them anyways. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I would wonder if its intentional, since vets seldom vote Democrat, while welfare recipients seldom vote anything else!
It really doesn't matter who we vote for at this point. The train has left, and the caboose has to follow. The only way to get the train on the right track is to wait for it to run out of diesel, and rebuild it on a new track, because this one leads only to disaster.
My hope is that it happens sooner, rather than later, so I can be part of the rebuild and not leave it to my kids and grandkids. As Thomas Paine said, "If there be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace."

I think that's the jist Stan. We would need to do away with every handout we have and then some. Grounding Air Force one would be a good start as well.

Us Hillbillies just speak original colonial american for the most part. Our isolation coupled with our inbreeding kept all those evil foreign influences at bay.LOL
"Recent research suggests that Appalachian English developed as a uniquely American dialect as early settlers re-adapted the English language to their unfamiliar frontier environment. This is supported by numerous similarities between the Appalachian dialect and Colonial American English."

If things in this country get too bad, WV will just close the roads and ignore the brief sideshow that the 21st century has been bringing us.
I recently posted this in Arfcom when someone asked about the least culturally diverse states:
Quote:I don't know if we're really number one or not, but we gotta at least be high in the running.
White persons, percent, 2011 (a)94.1%
Black persons, percent, 2011 (a)3.5%
American Indian and Alaska Native persons, percent, 2011 (a)0.2%
Asian persons, percent, 2011 (a)0.7%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander persons, percent, 2011 (a)Z0.2%
Persons reporting two or more races, percent, 20111.4%
Persons of Hispanic or Latino Origin, percent, 2011 (b)1.3%
White persons not Hispanic, percent, 201193.0%
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/54000.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographic...mographics
"At the 2010 Census, 93.2% of the population was non-Hispanic White, 3.4% non-Hispanic Black or African American, 0.2% non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.7% non-Hispanic Asian, 0.1% from some other race (non-Hispanic) and 1.3% of two or more races (non-Hispanic). 1.2% of West Virginia's population was of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (they may be of any race)."
"Only 1.1% of the state's residents were foreign-born, placing West Virginia last among the 50 states in that statistic. It also has the lowest percentage of residents that speak a language other than English in the home (2.7%)."
We are slowly trending towards being a "red" state politically, and if we actually make the conversion it'll make us the Appalachian Redoubt of the East.

Re-boot is when you see deflation after inflation can't be sustained anymore. Nations usually focus their discontented populace outwards to external "threats" when facing economic collapses, because it invigorates and unifies the people. Winston Churchill said of FDR..."I've never seen a politician who wanted war more than Mr. Roosevelt."
As the system winds down, and people re-allocate their purchasing priorities from cheap, worthless Chinese crap sold at China-Mart, and spend it on food, energy, water treatment, and security, those things will become disproportionately valuable. Unfortunately, most people who work in services that facilitate the importation, distribution, and retail sale of said Chinese garbage will lose their jobs, exacerbating the collapse.
When grocery chains shut down first in the inner cities and lower-tier priority markets to those with the most buying power and influence on distribution, the crap starts to hit the fan. In many ways, America's unique insulation from these types of events has camouflaged them as they have already begun, especially when you look at Detroit and other areas that were hit the worst by the credit crisis and following housing bubble burst, followed by waves of foreclosures.
As enough critical mass builds when banks continue to fail under the emasculation by socialists in D.C., unable to recoup their losses after being forced to give mortgages to people who refuse to have bank accounts, and are chronically in and out of jail, the losses will have to be absorbed somehow by the rest of us. Compound that with the same bottom-feeders who then strip the homes of copper wiring, plumbing, fixtures, and vandalize them as squatters, then move to the next neighborhood, and you compound the losses significantly.
It's very unrealistic to expect there to be a day when this all happens in the US, because that day has already passed, and the wave just builds slowly in numerous places until that critical mass transitions from low boil, to rapid boil. The National "leadership" (bwah ha ha ha ha ha) already had the "focus angst outward to foreign threats" card played in the last Administration, so there isn't anywhere to turn but inwards.
I think a trigger point is when the working class that used to be middle class and business owners lose their low-income jobs (while watching enough bottom feeders living a middle class lifestyle without working). Especially when many of them can no longer afford to take care of the truly helpless among us, while the Obama-voters/illegal immigrants go cruising by in their pimp cars with luxury electronics smoking dope and blasting their brainless drone sounds on the way to the next drug deal, while plowing over the carcasses of innocent children and bystanders...oh wait, we're already there.
All I can say is, "This too shall pass." and "Be of good cheer." Might as well choose to be happy and spend time with our families with the days we have left. On that note, I'm off to do exactly that.

You all have got funny accents from where I sit. ( And I did laugh out loud)
On a more serious note though many of us are where we are in the world because of how society was degraded by one means or another quite a few generations ago. Many in our collective past left thier homeland because of economic necessity and while often the start was hard, it was the spirit of these people that made our colonies into the places they are today - or rather what they were up untill the cultural revolution of the 60's changed the ethos of many of the young, who have grown to full maturity (age wise anyway) and are implementing the policies they practiced in the often drug induced socialist influenced circles they gravitated to.
As has been said - this stage of our collective countries journey toward irrevocable change has passed the tipping point and it just remains for it to play out the way history show us these things always play out. Economies will collapse and there will be social upheaval and this time arround there is not a fresh country for the dissafected to move on to and even if there were the majority of those who will be most effected are not of the mindset that gets on and manages in adversity.

I think you bring up a very good point there Von Gruff.
In the past--- When we could no longer stand other folks' noses in our business and their fingers in our pockets we simply pulled up stakes moved to new land and carved out successful new countries through hard work and danger.
With nowhere new to move to any longer, I have no idea how everyone will be able to avoid killing each other en masse before we could even possibly terraform other planets. Things'll likely get very ugly before (if ever) we manage to spread beyond Earth. If only we could be space colonists, we could be remote enough to be free again.
The Grendel would be handy on the new found "terran prairie forms".

Even waiting for the economy to collapse and then trying to revert to the way it was decades ago seems nearly impossible. Unless all of the liberals die off during the collapse...

I doubt all the liberals will "die", but I suspect that a great many people who consider themselves liberals now will begin to recognize that they aren't TRULY liberals, and will rapidly change in the interest of self preservation.
I would point at a great number of Hollywood, Sports, Entertainment, and other millionaires who think they are liberal, but don't actually contribute any significant amount to charity. (To me, significant starts at 10% or more of your assets and income.) If they really believe the liberal line, why wouldn't they be doing so? Why, for instance, does Warren Buffett espouse a luxury tax, and then send his accountants to war with the IRS?
Many of them are closet fiscal conservatives, happy to spend other peoples money, but not so willing to spend their own. Buffett seems of this group.
Studies differ in their analysis of charitable giving, but none of them show that Liberals give MORE than Conservatives; indeed, most show conservatives giving more, or at least giving equally to Liberals. IF Liberals REALLY believe that sharing the wealth is a good thing, why aren't they sharing theirs more?
The economic reset is going to happen, and there simply is nothing that can be done about it at this point. We are on the path Argentina went down in the late 1990's early 2000's, and will have very similar results. No one we elect can change it.
